Kinda shocked no one posted this, or did I miss it?

From my brothers on the Big island, hearing this was over a dam cell phone.

Just another day in Puna.  Two incidents I did not see on the news was one about a mile away in my subdivision, blocks here are 1 mile by 4/10 s of a mile, homeowner comes home to see a man and a woman taking things out of his house and loading it into a Subaru Forester.  He blocks his driveway with his car.  They ram his car twice to get out.  Their front bumper falls off but the plate on it was stolen.   The second was in Kopua Farm Lots subdivision.  All 20 acre lots and sparsely populated.  People call from gate.  Homeowner comes to gate, forced at gunpoint to unlock gate and go back to house where she gets robbed.  The very rare occasion when someone Icalls from the gate and it is someone I don't know or is not driving a company vehicle like FedEx, Direct TV, HELCO etc, I don't bother to walk 150 ft to the gate to see want they want.

We have a fair number of burglaries/thefts in my subdivision too. A couple of years ago the coconut wireless report from a homeowner's association board member was that there were more than 30 burglaries in 30 days (one of our resident professional criminals had been let out of prison and was again living with his dad in our subdivision). Only about half were reported to the police, and I never saw any reported in "the news". I  learned my lesson after the first of four burglaries (so far) of my place when I went into the police station to report the crime and was told that they weren't going to bother going to the scene of the crime (my home) to seek any forensic evidence such as fingerprints (in those days there were no "cop cars" owned by the county, only the "personal subsidized vehicles", i.e. "muscle cars", which those cops hated even attempting to drive down our seriously potholed unpaved roads, and likely wouldn't drive on unless being called to a murder scene. When I made the foolish mistake (hey, I was new to Hawaii) of asking if they thought it was possible that any of my property (mostly construction tools) would be recovered, the cop I asked just stood there dumbfounded for a few seconds as if he'd never heard such a stupid question in his whole life, and one of the cops sitting at a desk behind the counter actually looked up to see who could be asking such an idiotic question. People around here often don't report such crimes because they know there is really no point unless they know the identity of the criminal, and even then...

Funny. When I saw the title of this post I thought you were going to ask about where the best place to go "Shooting on the Big Island".

I worked on the new boat ramp at Pohoiki. It is one of the most beautiful places on the island IMHO.

There is a lot of burglaries/thefts in my subdivision (Ocean View) as well. Though there is less in the Ranchos (makai) than there is in the Estates (Mauka). Usually only the more spectacular incidents are reported. Like when one of my neighbors came home from an extended trip to the mainland and found his catchment tank and solar panels gone. He also found them being sold on Craigslist.

Probably the best argument against going solar in the Ocean View area is that there are several resident professional solar uninstallers working in the area. I really wish that was a joke...

Would surveillance footage of theft help with getting help from the local PD?

Three that I know of when a neighbor reported a suspicious vehicle ranged from 45 min to 2 hours.  Cops here really don't care.  I called to report a car illegally parked in a handicap stall and no one came during the 90 min I was there and the police station was 2 blocks away.  I did the same on Oahu, to see what happens when such a call is made.  A cop came in 8 min and  23 min later the car was being towed away.

They post grainy videos on SSH all the time but not sure how useful it is. Probably just as useful to install fake cameras around your property.

Some several years back we had some thieves stealing fruits from our farm during the nights and we had a load of pictures taken with a handful of those game cameras hidden in trees. We reported to the police with the evidence but they never really did anything about it for weeks and we were losing hundreds of dollars worth of fruits, so we had to scare off those thieves ourselves when they showed up at our farm gates in the middle of the night and never saw them again. So yeah they don't really do much unless it's something like a situation in progress or an emergency or if they spot a vehicle driving on the road.

The general consensus on SSH is that HPD doesn't want anyone confronting the perp if the location indicates where their stolen phone is, but the HPD won't confront the perp unless there is direct evidence of the crime other than a spot on a map.

I know the cops here don't give a s--t, so I am mentally and physically ready to deal with any thieves on my property.  Besides, calling cops for help could get you killed, judging by all those incidents on the news.  I would feel safer confronting the perp(s) myself with my AR15 and Glock.  With an expected response time of over an hour, they wouldn't get there in time anyway.  I would say for most places on the Big Island, you are pretty much on your own as far as police and fire is concerned.
