Wore out a gun?
« on: November 04, 2017, 04:31:59 PM »
Wondering if anyone wore out a gun where it needed a new barrel or gun was unusable (like broken frame or receiver).

I don't think I'm anywhere close.  Shot about 20,000 rounds out of the Glock 22, but those things can go 100,000 rounds.  About 10,000 through my used Beretta 92F.  Around 10,000 each out of my 22lr Buckmark and 10/22.  Maybe 10,000 or so out of my chrome lined AR15.

How many rounds before you start seeing a decrease in accuracy? Do you monitor/measure you freebore for throat errosion?

Centerfire barrels are a consumable item. They will wear out. Some people's line of where that is will vary greatly depending on accuracy expectations.

I feel unless you are shooting at the highest level of Benchrest type of shooting, you will never wear out a rimfire barrel from normal use. Over cleaning a rimfire barrel I believe will do more damage.

In your opinion on rimfire barrels, how often is “overcleaning”? Every 250 rounds? 1000?

Asking cause me and the missus shoot Ruger 10/22 and Henry Golden Boy respectively: clean every 3-4 range trips with Ballistol and and a bore snake. Thanks!

I clean my barrels with Boretech Rimfire Blend, patch and rod approx 500-1K rounds. On semi-autos I clean the chamber and bolt face often but leave the lube in the barrel. The carbon buildup in match and Bentz type chambers can cause problems with reliability.

If I won't be shooting for a long period of time, I run a couple of oil patches using the "weed whacker line" to remove the loose carbon. I feel the carbon can hold moisture and start corrosion.

You could talk to some hard core IPSC folks, I'm sure some of them have worn out pistols and rifles.

I'd guess about 3000 rounds.
I judge barrel condition on how far I seat 80s to the lands. Last barrel at about 3000 it was out far (can't remember the reading) but I'd have some off call 7s.

On another forum I frequent, we recently had a discussion about this. A well respected High Power shooter posted that he had approx .0025" erosion every 100rnds on one of his service rifle barrels. He attributed the atypical wear to over-cleaning the bore every range trip to "chase the lands". This was using Varget and RL15 with VLDs. Typically he sees 1 to 2 thou every 100rnds.

Yep - I subscribe to that same philosophy. The wear in the throat is the indicator of barrel's life. If anyone has a borescope you'll see the steel look like a dry river bed. I heard that melonite barrels offers longer barrel life but can be finicky. A melonite barrel may or may not shoot well after being treated - but the finish looks pretty cool

Not sure what kinda of ammo was shot, but my buddy has replaced shot out barrels as low as “mid-teens” thousand and as much as closer to “mid-twenties” thousands.

Personally, my highest round count AR is about 7000. I tend to rotate guns that I shoot often though. About the same with handguns.
