Tacticool 22 and fake supressor
« on: November 20, 2017, 08:53:18 AM »
Wife asked what I want for x-mas and i'm looking into a tacticool 22 (AR or MP5 type).  I was wondering if I get one that comes with a fake can, will HPD question it when registering it?  As in do I have to prove it's fake.  The MP5 I'm looking at comes with one.

I guess it might boil down to who's at the window that day.

I see plenty of cans at the range. The officer should be able to quickly determine if the attachment is a sound suppressor or not. In fact, the cans do make the rifle louder from my experience. As the saying goes, better to look good than to feel good.  :shaka:

are they screw ons?  if so, I would just take it off before registering.  no sense inviting additional scrutiny for no reason.

I just assumed that they can tell.  Have seen a bunch of 22 lr with the fake cans.  That said, if an officer can't tell, good question about what they would do.

Looking into this one which has a built in fake can.

I suppose the permanent can makes the rifle barrel at least 16".

Hmm, doesn't seem to be in stock anywhere. https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/723364201097?upc_only=1

my dad has one of these (GSG branded) and i've shot it on a few occasions.  it is fun to mess around with, but it probably isn't capable of good accuracy.

also, the mp5 was designed to be used with iron sights so adding a red dot can become kind of a pain in the butt--your cheekweld will move more toward a chin weld depending on the height of the mount.

i have a CMMG 22LR dedicated upper, which i ended up mounting onto one of my spare lowers.  i'd suggest going with an AR15 style 22 if you're going for something more tactical since it is a more inherently accurate platform and it will handle all common AR accessories.

Thanks for the info, I was planning on keeping the iron sights.  And don't plan on shooting more than 75 yards anyways.  But more like <50.

For me, I've always wanted a real MP5, but not the Hawaii version (16in barrel). To be more specific, the MP5K (the one the T-1000 used in Terminator 2).  Just defeats the purpose need a 16in barrel.  But everyone is telling me how much a 22 is fun to shoot so I thought I might as well get that one.  I do want something different, so a AR type 22 would be kind of boring for me.

Navy Seals was my fav movie growing up.  Watched it so much the VHS tape wore out.  And that's where I first saw the MP5SD.

How's the reliability with GSG?  Read it's hit or miss.  Some people get lemons.

i probably should have mentioned that the iron sights on the rimfire MP5s suck a lot.  it uses the normal HK style sights except that it is what you'd expect on a $300 rimfire clone.  maybe the best way to describe it is, they are probably on par with what you'd get if you bought an MP5 airsoft gun.  actually, i think you can even use a lot of airsoft parts on the rimfire MP5s.

i can't speak to the reliability of the GSG.  i'm sure it is like all other rimfire semi autos and is picky about the type of ammo.  if reliability was your goal, then i suggest a 10/22.  it's not that a 10/22 is more reliable per se, but everyone knows how to take them apart, fix them, and install upgrades so you won't be SOL if something breaks or you need help diagnosing a problem.  sure, a 10/22 isn't as tacticool, but it does give you a lot of options and offers a lot of upgrade potential.

i also want a real MP5, but even the clones are stupidly expensive.

i still think a dedicated 22LR upper for an AR is a good choice.  also the 22lr bolt conversion is a great alternative and they are getting a lot cheaper.  i think 22plinkster did a review on the CMMG stuff

X-ring Security had AR-15 22lr conversion kit and SpeedTek had made a dedicated upper.  He recommends a dedicated upper for better accuracy, 22lr barrel verse .223/5.56.

my .22 is to shoot what you like to shoot.  I own various .22 caliber guns-  bolt action, semis, open sights, scoped, single shot, lever action, whatever, and I get bored of shooting them after a little while, and would rather shoot my other guns.  Other people can shoot .22s all day long at the range and enjoy themselves.

The main advantage a 22 has over anything else is cost.  If cost wasn't a factor, I'd sooner pump 100 rounds through my 300 win mag than 100 rounds through my 10/22.

If you're looking for something with a mp5 feel, why not get something that chambers 9mm instead of 22lr?  Like maybe a carbine or AR or something.  If anything, the longer barrel will give the 9mm a few hundred more fps than a pistol or submachine gun

Yea I'm getting a bit off topic now but I have the CMMG 22 bolt that you just drop in your AR upper.  Accuracy is only good enough for hitting steel; you wont like what prints on paper.

I thought about getting a 9mm in a AR or other carbine, but for me, my train of thought is I just would be paying for an expensive pistol with a 16in barrel.  My main goal is to use this on the silhouette side at KHSC.  That's why also I don't want Hawaii's legal version of a MP5, Vector/Kriss, etc...

But update, HK licensed the making of the MP5 22 to Walther.  But they no longer make it anymore.  So as of now, there are none for sale.  I'll keep looking.

That makes sense.  I do enjoy shooting on that side.  And owning 22s is a plus since you can only shoot those and any caliber pistols on that side.

RE: no longer making - you can buy on the secondary market.  Armslist or gunbroker.  Probably need to be patient if you don't want to pay over msrp for those.  Keep looking is good  :)

Is this what you're looking for?  A little pricey, I've seen them under $300 before.

I was looking for the SD version (built in suppressor).  But may have to just buy this one and convert via HKparts.net.

I’ve shot prob 2000 rounds or so out of a gun basically the same as pictured below.

It was a friend’s gun. Don’t remember how the red dot was linked, but it was super fun to shoot. Think I see them for sale on Gunbroker here and there. IIRC, they were going for around $400 or so.

For me, next closest thing would be a M&P 15/22 and then a built up 10/22.

I wish they would allow shooting pistol caliber carbines and lever guns on the silhouette side. Would be so much fun!
