Buying and importing firearms from mainland
« on: December 22, 2017, 03:50:00 PM »
I am a resident of Hawaii and I am going to the mainland (Oregon) soon and would like to purchase a rifle while there and then bring it back with me. Is this allowed? I know that I am required to register it when I get back but is there anything else I need to do beforehand like renew my permit to acquire? Or is that only for purchases actually made in Hawaii? I want to make sure i follow the protocol so I don’t have any surprises when I walk into hpd to register. Thanks!

If you're not already a RAPBACK member, get ready to pay the $42 membership fee when you register.   :(

There's no 2 week wait when registering guns you own already and are registering as out-of-state.  You shouldn't have to have a current long gun permit, but why not go ahead and renew since you're there and are becoming a RAPBACK member, too?

Follow the info on the HPD website for more info.  Go to the Registration tab, then scroll to Out of State registrations.

As for actually getting the long gun in Oregon ...  you should call the gun stores in the area you intend to buy from and ask their policies.  I've read Oregon FFLs will refuse to sell to CA residents.  Since HI has a Permit to Acquire process, they may also refuse you, or at least ask to see your currently valid permit to acquire.

Worst case, they will require that they ship the gun to a HI FFL, which increases your cost.  If you go that route, then the process at HPD is no longer an out-of-state registration. You'd be technically transferring the gun from the HI FFL to you -- a local transfer.

So, call and ask the Oregon seller's policies so you know what to expect.  Then go from there.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Three day waiting period? Good news is that you can hunt black bear with a .22 pistol.
