(CNN) — The Florida state House on Tuesday rejected a ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines as dozens of survivors of last week's school shooting headed to the state Capitol to turn their grief into political action.

Lawmakers voted down a motion to consider the ban during a session that opened with a prayer for the 17 people killed by a former student last Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The vote was 36-71.

And one of the most discussed possible strategies to minimize the damage by murderers who target schools, school personnel CCW, was withdrawn from committee hearing and vote by the Judiciary chair, the usually very vocal pro-rights Greg Steube. I'd think exactly the opposite of what the sponsor said: this is exactly the right time to discuss effective strategies to minimize damage in future attacks. Go figure.

But last week’s shooting has prompted something of a truce, in what is usually a Legislature inclined to expand gun access.

Senate Judiciary Chair Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, withdrew legislation his committee was set to vote on Tuesday that would have allowed schools to designate a concealed weapons permit holder to carry a gun on campus. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, said Monday that he didn’t want to spark a fight over what critics have called an expansion of gun rights in Florida.

“I don’t think we’re ready for that discussion right now,” Baxley said. “I’m trying to solve a problem. Having a school as a gun-free zone, while well intentioned, makes it a sterile target. That would change if there was armed resistance.”
