Moving to Oahu This Summer
« on: March 11, 2018, 08:24:52 AM »
Good day,

I am in the process of moving to Oahu and a part of the preparation is determining what I can bring or should leave behind to save on the hassle of the laws and current legislation that is in the works. I want to make sure that I am in compliance with the laws and, based on suggestions, what not to bring due to possible future laws. Here is what I currently have:

VZ-58 Carbine
VZ-58 Compact in pistol form - This one is questionable, however, if I lock a 10 round magazine in it, ie bullet button or grind down the magazine catch to the point where it only retains the magazine, would that work or should I just leave it with a friend to be safe? Fortunately, the VZ-58 takes stripper clips.
VZ-61 Skorpion in pistol form - same as above, however since I can't use stripper clips with the Skorpion, this may be a bust and best to leave with a friend
AR-15 rifle - this one does have an Echo Trigger, however with HB1908 on the horizon, I will more than likely replace the trigger to be safe. Unless you think otherwise. This was an %80 lower so I still need to get it engraved.
Scorpion EVO carbine
Saiga-12 in Kushnapup stock
VZ52/57 Rifle
Enfield Mk4 Rifle
Enfield Jungle Carbine
1903-A3 Rifle
Rossie Ranch Hand Pistol
VEPR 7.62x54r Rifle
M39 Rifle
M44 Carbine
Ruger 10/22 takedown
Cook and Brothers Black Powder Carbine
Navy Colt Black Powder Pistol
FNX-45 Pistol (threaded barrel)
Sig Sauer P226 pistol
Sig Sauer P320 pistol
Sig Sauer Mosquito pistol
Smith and Wesson 1911 pistol
CZ-52 Pistol
Ruger MK3 22/45 pistol (threaded barrel)

I will be replacing my pistol standard capacity magazines with 10 round magazines before moving. Thank you, everyone, for your feedback. Like I said I want to be in compliance as well avoid any potential issues with future legislation that could render the above illegal and subject to confiscation. I know HPD is going to love me when I walk in to register,  :D.

I will also add I have an %80 1911 build untouched at the moment. Is it safe to say that if I bring it, then build it, I register it within five days of completion? Also, will I still need to acquire a pistol permit for registration? Thanks.

No, only for three years. It is a military move. I have been there before and I look forward to going back, however last time I did not have firearms.

Complicated because the pistol permit needs to be completed by the seller but should be okay as long as it engraved. You don't want them to do it for you. AFAIK, 80% is in a regulated grey area between acquiring and registration.

Don't bring your AK47/AR15 pistol variants here, leave them with friends or family on the mainland.

For pistol magazines, you can limit them to 10 rounds by driving a rivet through the floor plate or welding or epoxying a rod to the bottom of the follower or someother not readily removable way.

Oh heck, 3 years will fly by in no time.
I would bring only a few of your favorites and store the rest.
Do you have a favorite activity? Hunting? Action pistol? Etc?
What, Me Worry?

That is what I was thinking of doing. Right now, mainly target shooting. I would like to see about getting into three gun, but I am open to just about anything, I am looking to see about joining a club as well and being involved with the local shooting community.

What is the ammunition market like on island? I hate having to leave behind what I have, but it is what it is.

I arrived on the island with two Mosins and a can of surplus 54r that I could get for 26cents per. If you can find it and you’re lucky, it’s 80cents per here. I started to get into reloading then. Plenty of places to buy powders and primers. Everything else I get from mainland.

You are able to have ammo shipped to you? I have been researching and didn't find much in the way of shipping ammo without paying an arm and a leg.

It's not worth getting ammo shipped in unless you're buying 22lr from the CMP or doing a group buy.

A bunch of stores have occasional sales on cases.  9mm is usually $225 a case, 5.56 is around $350.

Welcome.  Good to get one more gun guy in the islands.

As stated before you should not bring any pistol variant AR/AK here.  It is too difficult to make legal and you end up ruining them in that process.

80%, especially a pistol, will be a hassle to get legal.  If you wan to get in depth at the idiocy of our firearms laws it would be an experience.

Good fortune for your move! and again welcome to Hawaii!

You have to register every gun you bring.  Since you have a lot, I would only bring a hand full.  Because you will either have to make multiple trips to the police station, or bring a big truck.  Hawaii has a "places to keep" law.  So you can only go from your home to the police station (point A to B) with your guns in a commercial grade container.  No stopping for coffee or lunch.

If you do bring all your guns, let us know so that way we don't go to the police that day.  I've been in line for 45 mins with only 2 people in front of me registering 1 gun each.

Keep all rifles with a barrel less than 16" and shotguns less than 18" barrels in your current state.  Read and understand all of HRS134.  It goes over our gun laws.

Added info:

If you plan on buying a pistol here, you have to take a Hawaii handgun safety class first, unless you're military then there are alternatives to the class.  For each pistol you buy, you have to apply for a permit to acquire/purchase, that comes with a 2 week waiting period.  And registration.  So if you buy a pistol, then 2 days later want to buy another, its a separate 2 week waiting period for each.

For rifles/shotguns, you have to apply for  a "permit to acquire/purchase" (2 week waiting period at time of application).  This is good for 1 year, you can buy what ever you want and not wait the 2 weeks.  But have to register each item bought.

Not much opportunity for 3-gun here.  Or at least the version that I'm used to seeing on the mainland.  Range available and accessibility is often the limiting factor.  Since you are military, you are eligible to shoot with Schofield Rod & Gun Club.  I haven't been a member in over a year, but they had open range days that allowed you to shoot a wide range of targets and distances.  They did have some defensive shooting here and there, but not very often and I'm not even sure if they continued that group due to hassles with range control.  Otherwise, you're generally limited to the 50 and 100 yard lines for rifle and 25 yard lines for pistol at Koko Head.  I know they have "friends and family" type open shoots at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, but I've never been.

As suggested above, I'd recommend maybe 2-3 rifles and 2-3 handguns in calibers readily available on-island.  9 mm is still easy to get for good prices.  .223/5.56, 7.62x39 and .308 Win are also readily available for reasonable prices.  Those are generally the calibers that I still with.  I have other calibers, like .40 S&W and .45 ACP, but I don't shoot them often.

Nope, too expensive. After a while, you get a feel for which LGS has the best prices/availability. WGS has the hard to find stuff and fun to browse through his inventory. HGS and Young Guns compete for powder prices but not primers. SEC has great powder and primer prices. Roy's Fishing has insane prices but limited availability. I don't suppose you'll be in town this weekend for the Gun Show but it's a good place to check out all of the LGS in town. They have it every six months.
