Thanks everyone. Good info here. One thing I was wondering though is about my ability to sell the motorbike in Hawaii as opposed to say just selling it in San Diego and renting a vehicle in Hawaii. Would the bike have a greater value in Hawaii? Regulatory issues selling it? In either case I would need a vehicle in Hawaii which is why I was considering just bringing my bike with me and then selling it there.
If you're not military, you'll have to do a Hawaii Safety Inspection and either a Hawaii title/registration or Out-of-State Permit within 30 days of arriving on-island.
if you're planning on owning the bike more than a year after arrival, you need to surrender your out of state title, do the safety check, and register the bike to get a HI title and tag.
If you don't plan to keep the bike for more than a year, or will be returning with it to the mainland in that time, you can apply for a HI Out-of-State Permit. It's good for 12 months, but you keep your out-of-state title and tags. You'll still need to do the HI safety check before applying for the permit.
Military who are not HI residents are allowed to either continue driving on their old plates or get a reduction in HI registration, depending on your specific situation (state of legal residence, etc.).
https://www.dmv.org/hi-hawaii/car-registration.phpThere should be no problem selling the bike with a new HI title, but having an out-of-state title could make a buyer nervous. It will make transferring the title a little more complicated, so you'll likely need to go with the buyer to the DMV to handle the transfer.
As for cost, when I first moved here, my 1 yr old Honda Accord was listed in the classified for $1K more than I paid new in VA. You can check Craigs List, MarketPlace Facebook pages and the local news paper classifieds online to see what the market prices are for bikes similar to yours. Here's one page where I found a great deal on a car recently:
