Hold off on getting another AR?

So, with all this ban AR s**+ going on, is it a bad time to even get another one? And say for instance it becomes unfortunate that it does pass? Will it come to the point that we have to turn in our guns? Or we get to keep what we have but can’t shoot it in a range. Or at any private land for that matter?

Sounds like you’re more concerned about if ARs will be banned with future legislation. Or are you concerned about buying before further restrictions are put into place?

For the former, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen.

For the latter, last I checked, could still find ARs in “somewhat reasonable” price range. Though they harder to find. I haven’t seen the crazy prices like in 2012-2013. I’ve been told that distributors have been selling out or at least super quick. We saw the same general rush before. Even mags are harder to come by, but you can find at decent prices if you look.

If they ever come for our guns, there will be about a million ARs supposedly laying on the bottom of the ocean.

I say get it now while you can.

If you're three miles offshore, you're in international waters and can uncase your firearm, you know in case of pirates.  ;)

I’m contemplating about it. Not because of all the s**+ goin on. I just want a different caliber in a AR platform as part of my hobby of shooting.. But at the same time, don’t wanna get screwed in the end..

I to thought about this.  But not buying a complete rifle due to space, money, and I don't really like having 2 of the same items.

Instead, I though of buying a few lowers so I can make my own, or for sell/trade.

So how many lowers are too much?  I met a guy at Prime who bought 20 lowers pre election.

Edit: In fact, I was at HPD today and there were about 9 people in line.  So i'll go back on a later date to get my permit.  I had to go get a police report for a work related matter.  And figured, since I'm there, might as well apply again.

I say go for it. Go on enjoying shooting.

As for investing in stripped lowers, I’ve seen many do it. I had a few at one time. I still have a stripped lower (or so) and also have complete lowers ready for an upper. You don’t really wear out an lower, so I hope that uppers remain in their current status.

I recall you couldn’t get lowers at one time in 2012-2103. That’s about when Spikes for super popular as they were seemingly the only company churning them out. Then came the polymer lowers and such. I remember folks buying up the $80-100 lowers and selling then for much more. Craziness.

There are many speculators out there buying up as many receivers and rifles as they can afford hoping a ban happens.  Then when the rush starts, they can dump them for multiple times what they paid.

That's a big "if".  Most assume any ban would include a grandfathering of existing Assault Weapons (not just AR15s).  That means there will be a mad rush to own one before the law kicks in.

If you're already in the market for an AR, it's going to be hit or miss to find a good deal, but they are out there.  Take your time, do lots of searching online, and grab a good deal when you find it.

If you're speculating there's going to be a ban, maybe 80% lowers would be the way to go?  No need to go through an FFL (saves lots of money when buying many items), and they can be stored without HPD registration.  If the ban happens, you could sell a few at a profit to fund your builds.  I've seen some lowers going for ~$50 each.  If the ban fails to happen, you would still be able to get what you paid selling them, if you need the cash.

Buying when there is a threat of a ban will cost you more than when things are quiet.  Prices started dropping when Hillary lost.  Now they are going up.  Wait, or buy?  It all depends.

An AR platform would not be my first choice,
but given how this state is going real nutcase,
I'd consider getting an 80% lower and all the parts
needed to build an AR. But I would not assemble it.
Then you don't have register it, so the grabbers
won't  know you have a gun.
Then stock up on several
thousand rounds of ammo for it.
You can put it together in less than a day if you
suddenly needed it.

Hm, I want the lowers not to resell, but to arm family in the future should these weapons not be available to them.  I've got two little ones - by the time they are able to buy their own guns, its looking like the only guns theyll be picking up (after a permit to acquire) will be of the airsoft variety.

I suppose there are definitely price speculators out there, but im speculating on there not being an easy supply of these in the future for those that want a fantastic rifle.

Good advice.  You dont have to register it, until you start milling with intent of creating a firearm.

However, if you've ever tried to do an 80% before, you'll eventually be longing for something a bit more factory for longevity and reliability.

Most bans have a clause that the rifle is non-transferable.  Good thing Hawaii allows 15 days of "borrowing", or 75 days if out of state.  Not sure how a ban would affect that either though.  Anyone from 1994-2004 can chime in?  This is why all my pistols are joint with the Mrs, but not the rifles/shotgun.

Yup, I realize that.  However, I'd like to have some options rather than no options, you know what I'm saying?

However, Hawaii is fully of property crime and I dont see that going away in the future.  My kids future lowers might be stolen the morning of confiscation, just like that officers.

I bought some lowers when I bought handguns. Since I needed to make the trip to HPD for the handgun, might as well take care of lower. In the last threat of a ban, I did get a few more thinking of spares and some maybe for family and friends that might miss the boat. Never really thought of them for investment value, but I know a few folks who do.

I did have some ridiculous offers for a NIB Colt 6720 during the last run on ARs. Should have sold it and could have got more than 3 complete Colts since then.

If you buy 80% lowers, don't count on keeping them forever without being required to register them.  In a ban, you have to register anything that is going to be grandfathered.  If you don't, it's deemed illegal, no matter  when you bought it and whether or not registration was required at that time.

The options would likely be:  (1) register to grandfather it, and have no right to legally transfer it, or (2) resign yourself to having an illegal ghost gun, and take your chances.
