According to his bio, his family moved to HI from Ann Arbor, MI, when he (and his twin brother) were two.

He went to CA to attend college, and spent a year in Kenya as part of the International Training Program.

He returned to teach at Punahou after earning his B.A. in philosophy.  He then took other jobs in the non-profit sector before politics.


How long does someone need to live, work, & study in HI until they are accepted as "local?"  Or is that just an ethnic term?

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns regarding gun control and Second Amendment rights.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families that have been affected by this tragedy.  But warm words are not enough.  Thoughts and prayers won’t stop this from happening again.  It is time for Congress to finally stand up against gun violence and take action so this never happens again.

I have supported gun control efforts because I believe that we can protect the Second Amendment rights of Americans while preventing the kind of senseless gun violence that has affected communities across the country.  I support bringing national gun control standards in line with the high standards already enforced in Hawaii,  :shake:which have resulted in our state having the lowest number of gun deaths per capita in the nation.  I also recognize the importance of protecting both public safety and Second Amendment rights and believe that we can have both.

While we may disagree on this matter, I hope that this has helped to clarify my position and that you will continue to stay in touch on issues important to you.

local isn't determined by a time period, its an attitude or way of thinking and acting.  it can be considered a good thing or a bad thing, depends in what context you are viewing it

locals in Puna were short on food and water, and he had a photo op where he gave some guy from Puna 1 bottle of water as a gesture of helping the unfortunate

Schatz and Hanabusa went to Puna about a week after Iselle hit, to campaign due to the postponed voting at two voting sites because of storm damage. After more than a week of no power, no water, etc., people would not only have gratefully accepted water from Schatz, but from a retarded monkey. But I repeat myself.

I'm willing to help with a shooting session for him so he can at least get some experience with guns.  I could see Honolulu Firearms or Xring would be willing to have a after hours shooting session.  I just need a person from District 2 that is willing to go to his office and invite him.  D2 is rural Oahu (outside of Ewa/Mililani/Hawaii Kai) and outerislands.

Correct me if I am wrong but Senators do not have districts and serve the whole state, Representatives have districts due to the fact that the number of Representatives is dependent on the population of the state.

It's the same for Senators.  They serve the State but give priority to their district.  That's why you can only vote for one senator during elections.  If the Senators were different and represented everyone in the state equally, then you'd be able to vote for both of them.

The reason you only see one Senator on the ballot is the other's term isn't almost up.

Schatz is a US Senator.  He's not assigned to a district.  We have 2 Senators in the US Congress, as do all other states and the District of Columbia.  State population has no bearing on the number of US Senators.

Hawaii State Senators are assigned to 25 districts, 17 of which are on Oahu.
