New to HI shooting, minor help needed
« on: May 14, 2018, 03:29:17 PM »
Hello all, a few questions. I will be moving to island in July

-I am curios to where I can shoot at distance past 100 yards for certain, a dream would be out to 1000 but I doubt there is anywhere on island to accommodate that.

-reloading components (powders, primers etc.) are they hard to come by? I will be reloading 30-30, .223, 6.5 PRC and 6.5 CM.
Local shops carry supply of 30-30 and higher end .223 ammo such as prime and hornady etc. in 77grainish range? I'm sure 6.5cm flies off the shelf

-The 6.5 PRC is half half way built but if there are no ranges to shoot at due to distance limitations or rules about type of cartridges allowed then I suppose I will cancel that build and dream for another day.

The only places I know that allow shooting past 100yd are

1) Puuloa Range,  you gotta join the club and volunteer because most of the range time is structured like competition.  You pair up and score for your partner and then swap.  I am not a member so I am telling you what I have heard.  Pretty regular schedule once a month.  http://www.puuloa.com/

2) Schofield Military Range, you also have to join the club, if you are military then you can join any time but if you are civilian then there is a military-to-civilian ratio that may have a waiting list,  this range is only open at the discretion of the Army so it is hit or miss and can be last minute.  https://www.srgchi.org/

3) Private ranch, but you gotta know someone and I don't...

*The only public range is Kokohead Shooting Complex but it has been limited to 100 yd for several years now after complaints by "anti-freedom" types  ::)http://khsc.info/

Young Guns has good powder and primer selection (for Hawaii).  So-so bullet selection.

Mail ordering bullets is easy but sometimes shipping costs can hurt.
Mail ordering primer and powder usually cannot ship or hazmat fees are so high it is impractical.

I believe KR-3 at Schofield has targets out to 1200 yards, but access to that range was rare. At least when I was a member up until 2 years ago. At the CR ranges, would shoot to 500 yards, but you needed to RSVP, go early to set up target and target changes weren’t regular. I actually never saw anyone shoot past 200 yards there.

I know Puuloa has shooting positions at 1000 yards and beyond. However, I was told that only .mil are allowed back there. Last time I was there, it didn’t look like anyone had maintained that area in months since it was grown over.

You didn't ask but figure I would mention just in case.  Not sure if you are coming from another island or the mainland...

Hawaii is pretty restrictive on firearms in general so do your research before bringing over certain toys.  Rules like 10rd limit on pistol mags, no suppresors/silencers, no full-auto and no SBRs even if you have the tax stamp.

Last time I ordered my bullets, they came USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail" , all 4,000 rnds of 9mm coated weighing in at the max for $13.00 ;D
(They left a note in my mailbox to P/U at PO.    )
Don't know why you would order primer and powder by mail when readily available locally.

Welcome to paradise,
WGS is the place to go for reloading parts but powders and primers are pricey. They do have the hard to find powders like RL7 and Unique, and God bless them for that.
SEC, YG and the nearby HGS have great powder prices.
Roy's Fishing has mainland prices for powders and primers but they sell out fast so it's hit/miss.
Brownell's has free shipping and 10% off with the ubiquitous m3p code as long as you don't order too many bullets (aka heads).
Cabela's also has great sales periodically.
Some people have had success with Midway free shipping but have been burned before so weary.

Welcome to rapback.  :shake:

Thank you all so much!

I should of stated I'll be on Oahu, over on Kaneohe bay.

No scary weapons are coming with me just 2 bolt action built off a bighorn arms action, a Winchester 1894 30-30 manufactured in 1916 and a SW M&p shield 9mm that is a California compliant model.

Powders I'll be looking for are RL26, H1000, varget. Hopefully a steady supply of one of them. I'm sure 6.5 PRC factory ammo hasn't hit the shelves there yet maybe?

The idea of civies running around his base with legal weapons didnt jive well. Couple that with "active shooters" scenarios and he didnt want to accept the risk....what ever that may be...of course this is what I heard.

I could not find any info regarding caliber restrictions for the Puuloa club shoots, is there any?

That's too bad, I'm sure new guy shows up in 2 years maybe it will change? I hope it does, I'm set to live less than 2 miles from that range on base. I will have to join the Puuloa club and shoot my .223. I'll probably sell the 6.5's no use bringing em I guess. Is Puuloa only matches or do they do any open days come and practice? I've never shot any of the type matches offered there

They have both Matches and Open Practices. Practices are run similar to matches as far as course of fire. Check the website for scheduled events. The range is closed for renovations until further notice.

Plenty of H1000 (about $35 per bottle) to be had but probably have to get RL26 at WGS, probably $45 per pound.

Looks like Todd in the back...

Just your typical pit range. It's fun when the planes fly low...

Supposedly, the range will reopen after July.
