Watched the new Red Dawn
« on: May 23, 2018, 09:07:26 AM »
The old one is still way better, but it had me thinking.  There was a scene where the group picked up some guns and ammo from a friends apartment.  But if this were Hawaii and we were invaded, the invaders would know exactly who has what guns and where they most likely live.  Compared to other states that have no registration.

Even Yamamoto himself during WWII stated invading America was not an option/hesitant because every household has a gun.  So not only would Japan be fighting the military, but it's armed citizens as well.  He studied college in the US, and when invited over to peoples homes for dinner is when he noticed that.  Compared to Japan where most households had no guns.

I enjoyed both and I too like the original better.  However, the recent one does incorporate things more relevant to current events.  Realistic?  Maybe, maybe not, but more than back in the early 80s.  The recent one had better optics on their rifles.   ;D

The firearm registration thing was in the original Red Dawn.  Where that Cuban officer said to look up the Form 4473 (or whatever) I don't recall it coming up in the recent version.

That scenario could potentially happen, if we were living in the 20th century, with the US fighting in a war with a military peer.

IMO, assuming no use of nuclear weapons, a war between military peers in the 21st century will begin with economic embargoes, tariffs, sanctions, and etc. to weaken the military financial base of the opponent, then fought with missiles and probably EMP type weapons to neutralize military and civilian infrastructure.  The resulting SHTF situation and widespread starvation, disease, rapes, murders, and killings on the streets would do sufficent damage, compelling the government to bring a quick end to the war.

The use of ground troops would be used by the victor in the end to quell or intimidate the small pockets of unarmed/armed resistance and serve as an occupying force, as currently seen with US military forces illegally occupying Syria and Hawaii.

I remember watching the new gen reboot of Red Dawn. I wore my Wolverines shirt to the theater. At the end I was disappointed. The original RD was gritty and felt more raw.
My fave quote:
"Whats the difference between us and them?!"
"Because we live here."

Now I remember that also.  So if we get invaded, it's the duty of all gun stores to burn all 4473's.  Interesting how they would throw that into the 80's film.  Someone did their homework.

I liked that movie before I got into guns.  I didn't note that part until after I got into guns and involved in more 2a stuff.  But yeah, interesting how someone threw that in there.

While I always wanted an AK, I have to admit that Red Dawn did increase my interest in owning an AK.  Any reason that is for getting a new gun is a good reason.  Haha

I used that reasoning to buy an AK, "if we get invaded, most likely they will have an AK so ammo can be found on the ground.".

Then the wife's response " Well if the ammo's on the ground, so will the AK.  So don't buy an AK".

I don't own an AK.

I wonder if EMP attack would bring on retaliation as if it were a WMD
like when they were promoting the neutron bomb as something that would destroy things, but not as much nuclear fallout
yeah, that's much better than ICBMs, russia will not proliferate if we use a neutron bomb

to raise it over your head and yell "WOLVERINES!"

The arguments about whether or not Yamamoto actually said that or that quote (or sentiment) was just attributed to him goes on an on.  What I found interesting are the discussions related to that about whether or not an armed populace could have repelled the Japanese Army, or any conventional army, as well as the overall strategy of Japan in the Pacific.  What would have happened if the Japanese Army had landed in Hawaii, what if they made it to the west coast, etc.

I've always been interested in the history and who hated/fought who behind WWII, and WWI too.  I recently started watching the Band of Brothers series.  While different theater, I've also been interested in movies about the fighting in other theaters that aren't as well covered in the movies, like the North African and Middle East.

And now that the summit with NK is off (at least for now), I did a search on what small arms NK utilizes.  No idea how accurate this site is, but I thought it was interesting, and at least plausible.
