Tried not cleaning guns
« on: May 31, 2018, 09:00:52 PM »
I always hear "i never clean my gun" or "idk when was the last time".

So i tried not cleaning from last saturdays range day. Its been bugging me every damn day since. Like a bug burrowed into my brain, eating away slowly.  So i finally gave in and cleaned everything.

I'm one of those non cleaning guys. I take out loose powder fouling because of our high humidity and moisture. Rarely give a full cleaning even the precision rigs.

+1

My .22 rifles only get cleaned when they won't chamber a round any more.    I fire 10-20 rounds and they are as accurate as the day I put them together.

My old military rifles get cleaned when the brass starts coming out of the chamber dirty. Which is probably every 5-10 times out to the range. Precision rifles get cleaned every time out since I rarely ever shoot them any more and they sometimes sit a long time without being shot. And all my pistols get cleaned the same day I shoot them since I don't shoot them often either and will sit long periods without use.

I also read and hear of people saying "I've shot 50,000 rounds thru my Glock without a single malfunction".

No they haven't. No they haven't.

Don't own a Glock

Might get one eventually.  I did shot very good with it at KHSC once.  Index card, same hole.

I own a Gen 2 Glock 17 that has never malfunctioned until... At around 20 years and 9k-10k rounds It started malfunctioning. Changed the return spring and that cleared up the malfunctioning. Not too long after that I started seeing light strikes on my military (hard primer) ammo. But no light strikes on my reloads. I replaced all the other springs including the striker spring and it has worked perfectly since. Maybe it’s the number of years and not the number of cycles that wore the springs out? But I’m with you, I doubt any gun can shoot 50k rounds without certain parts such as springs wearing out and causing some sort of malfunction until repaired.

Edit: Forgot to state I kept it clean after every use.

Glock or not, its another one of those exaggerations from gun owners on forums.

On YouTube, there is a video of a guy with a Colt LE6920 that claims he put over 7,000 rounds through without cleaning and only adding lubrication. In the video he does take it apart to clean and its the most god awful thing I've ever seen and Im not surprised the damn thing finally seized up on him. Lucky for him he didnt have a bore obstruction from all the fouling that could build up in the leade from not cleaning the barrel and chamber.. unless he did without saying so. The guy claims he put over 20,000 rounds thru the rifle overall:

The vid was satisfying. I wonder what his total time was. I spend about 20 mins each clean session.  So 12 sessions (once a month) thats 4 hours a year cleaning.

I always hear "i never clean my gun" or "idk when was the last time".

I was trained about firearms by experts that would do an inspection and were geniuses at finding soot or whatever you had missed.  Operating rod and underneath the barrel were the most common omissions.

Immediate and minute cleaning were ingrained in me.  Overseas, it was not so much of a daily deal if not fired, but kept oiled for humidity.

Hard to break old habits, dunno if I could go to sleep at night with an uncleaned firearm.

Im on week 2 of not cleaning the 6 handguns 1 rifle I took the range. 1st week it was hard not cleaning them that turned to mild irritation and now in week 2 its starting to fade altogether :D

I got a solution for you to not clean your guns.  If you really get the urge to clean your guns, clean mine instead.

I clean all my guns as soon as possible. I'm just concerned that my guns are going to rust especially the barrel and I'll be all sad and depressed. Ha!

Bore snake and some oil after the range. Maybe once a year I'll do a cleaning.

I got a first production run Gen4 G17 when first released.  It went over 5K with no lube other than factory gold and 10K before its first cleaning.  At 25K, I finally swapped out the original non-marked RSA and ejector to help with the ejection issue it had from the get-go.  I have seen several M4/AR's with thousands upon thousands of rounds with no cleaning and just lube only, one guy close to me has a few.  I don't suggest this, but I am not a cleaning freak either.

A few glocks at my workplace have a lot of rust spots on the slides, forgot if it's gen 3 or gen 4.  I don't know when they were last cleaned if ever.
