Brutal beating of two Japanese tourists in Kakaako makes news headlines in Japan.

The guy was using a public bathroom on coral street, gets attacked,  the wife comes to investigate and gets choked out.  Apparently nothing stolen.
It's making news in Japan so HTA, etc made a statement, essentially trying to do damage control.

Changemyoil, that's why I always sweep the bathroom stalls first and wait inside for my wife.

^^^Yups.  I go to UFC Gym often and I see the homeless in the area.  So I'm not surprised that this happened.  I have contacted Saiki who is the district rep many times and get no response.  It was only a matter of time before something happens.  And many gym goers park on the street also.  So imagine at 10pm a girl walking back to their car in booty shorts and sports bra.

PD kicks them out from here, then they go to Kakaako until they're kicked out there.  And then they come back here.  IDK why PD only does the bare minimum when "relocating" the homeless.  A few months ago, there was $100K worth of electircal damage to the park.  Homelss tapped into the lighting.

Such a shame that they weren't armed or someone nearby wasn't armed and could drop the punks dead.

This is the result of a State that doesn't trust its citizens to protect themselves and give leniency to criminals.

I can see Japanese tourists being naive, trusting, and feeling helpless against acts of violence due to their culture.

I agree. Things like this dont happen in japan as often as america.  I visit the shirokiya village a lot and until they got security, there were cops there often for stolen purses. They leave their purse on the table and grab food. Come back and its gone. I was told by pd that in japan, they do that all the time with no problems.

Used to play ball there not 2-3 years ago. Used to have occasional horneless washing up in that restroom, but not all the time. Haven’t been there in a while other than to pass by.

Just received a mailer from Rep Saiki about how he’s working hard to improve thing for his community. I’m gonna send him this article and ask him what he’s doing to improve things and why he’s seemingly working to further limit how responsible citizens can defend themselves and not doing anything that addresses the obviously growing problem. Don’t expect a response, as with the many emails sent previously, but it’s getting worse and worse in this area. Even Thomas Square is getting bad again.

Japanese tourists wouldn't have firearms anyway, and it's unlikely another friendly would be in the bathroom.

I can't believe the drink system at Shirokiya, anyone can just grab one out of the refrigerators and you are unlikely to be caught. I thought maybe it was a Japan thing, but when I visited I don't see food courts there. Even if there were, they have coin-based drink machines in the streets, so I'm guessing they would use those instead.

When I went to Tokyo Disney, I would see purses in the strollers while they were on rides. Many times cameras and camcorders too. Just out there and there was usually dozens of them in the stroller parking area at each ride.

Suspect arrested.

http://m.hawaiinewsnow.com/hawaiinewsnow/db_330510/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=XycJbttd

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the brutal assault of a Japanese couple, which led to a warning to visitors from the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu.

The consulate issued a caution to its citizens here to be aware of criminal activity in Kakaako. The area has become popular because of the number of huge murals, which the Japanese call "art walls."

The warning was posted on the consulate website after the couple was injured in the attack on Memorial Day. Authorities said the two entered a restroom at Mother Waldron Park. The park was closed for repairs the next day due to damage blamed on an influx of homeless people.

The couple and their adult daughter were visiting the district to see the murals, which are now well known to Japanese visitors. The new alert specifically urges travelers to avoid using public restrooms in the area.

The alert says the couple came upon several people doing drugs and were attacked. The violence included blows to the head and choking, and both reported cracked teeth among other injuries.

Police said the suspect is not homeless and that the attack was unprovoked. He was arrested on several outstanding warrants and two counts of second-degree assault.

Police also said officers check the area regularly and that assaults at Mother Waldron Park are rare. The department did not directly criticize the consulate's message, which suggested widespread criminality in the district.

The consulate warning is in Japanese and the consulate would not make an English translation available. A rough translation indicates that visitors who visit Kakaako need to be aware of purse snatchings and other crime in the area, which the message says is not as well-patrolled as Waikiki.

A spokesman for the consulate told Hawaii News Now that such warnings are not unusual. A similar warning about "boy gangs" that had developed in Waikiki was posted a few weeks ago after another incident involving a Japanese bridal couple.

The spokesman said all Japanese travelers are expected to register with the consulate, and anyone who registered would have been alerted to go to the website to read the warning. He said that meant that the warning was certainly seen by "many, many people."

Jessica Lani Rich, of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, said her organization is trying to find a way to raise money to help the victims pay tens of thousands in medical bills. She says they have already returned to Japan after being treated in a hospital.

On Friday afternoon, Mayor Kirk Caldwell issued a statement on the assault:

“This attack goes against everything we stand for as a community, and if found guilty, I want the alleged perpetrator to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Honolulu remains one of the safest big cities in the nation, but we must remain vigilant and do all that we can to ensure that our residents and visitors always feel safe at our parks and other public areas.”

The mayor's office added the individuals who had been living near the park provided a good description of the suspect to investigating officers.

The media should ask saiki why he waited till last minute. This has been a back and forth issue foe years. No new bills proposed.

Have all of the politicians take a stroll alone at night through kakaako, ala wai, pearl harbor and other encampments.  Let those people camp at the state capitol and honolulu hale.

Bet things will get rolling really quickly after that.

I was returning to Waimea one night.
We were on old Saddle road.
My fellow worker, a retired Lt. Colonel marine
and me a discharged AF Staff Sergent. saw
an unusually parked car.
Concerned, we approached to see if the people
were OK. Old Saddle road was very dangerous
and it was a rental, not supposed to be there.
We both approached like the military taught us.
Bright lights and noise, for police work.
Sacred the hell out of a couple being intimate
out in the middle of nowhere. They almost ran
us over as they sped off.
We were were trying to be good Samaritans.
America can be a very dangerous place.
We are used to it, I certainly am.
I tried to get a job in Compton CA
once.  They would not hire me because I am White.
I got a job in Wilmington instead.
Only CA people will appreciate those places.
Perhaps a brochure or two handed out
to warn people not to do stupid things might help.

Didn't know there were warnings about Boy Gangs being posted, but yeah it's definitely getting a little sketchy out there.

I was surfing Ala Moana last week and paddled in through the safe zone after dark, so had to take the long walk back to my car. It was the typical weekend scene but passed by this section of young guys 16-20 sitting on the wall and they were definitely eyeing me up. Was really glad there were tons of other people around. I don't usually get creeped out by situations like that but in this case my spidey senses were definitely tingling.

There are definitely many places that are pretty sketch nowadays that I never used to think of before.  Maybe it was me being naive or even unawares when I was younger, but I do think times have definitely changed.  It has been gradually getting worse in say the last couple of years, but really bad lately.

I grew up in PC/Aiea area and we used to hang out at Pearlridge all the time.  Fun Factory, movies, etc.  I go there here and there nowadays, and it's super sketch, especially in some of the areas of the parking lot.  Even had many videos of brawls over hats inside the mall.  Nothing to the level where I felt threatened personally, but I recall thinking not the greatest place for kids to be hanging out like we used to.

I've even seen homeless making their way out to Hawaii Kai area.  I have to think that's where folks will start speaking up more.
