Gay Americans are Arming Themselves to Stay Alive

Quote
“I don’t want to get beaten to death, stabbed and burnt alive,” a slight woman with long blond hair and a checked
shirt says. “I want a gun to feel equal.”

She is a member of one of the United States’ fastest-growing gun clubs, the jauntily named Pink Pistols.

Two years after the massacre at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, gay, lesbian and transgender Americans are nervous.
According to the Human Rights Center (HRC), a US LGBTI advocacy group, 52 gay people were murdered in the
US last year because of their sexuality, and 28 transgender people met the same fate.

In increasing numbers, they are fighting back by taking up arms.

It’s brought them into lock step with pro-gun groups that haven’t, historically, been all that welcoming of gay people.

Australian journalist Patrick Abboud traveled to the US to meet some of the new gun-toting gay people, for a report
to be broadcast on Australian news show “The Feed” on Tuesday.

It was a sobering experience, he told News.com.au.

“There is one murder per week of a gay person purely because they’re gay, and that’s really horrifying. The level of
homophobia and transphobia in the USA is out of control and some people told me a gun is the difference between
living and dying.”

The Pink Pistols have been nicknamed the “gay NRA,” a reference to the controversial National Rifle Association that
is a staunch proponent of pro-gun laws.

“I would never have thought I’d see the LGBTI community siding with incredibly conservative, right-wing, pro-gun
advocates that have been publicly homophobic and transphobic — that didn’t make any sense,” Abboud explained.

But after meeting some of the gun club’s members, Abboud said, there was a real fear that had only been stoked by
the country’s rabid political landscape.

Tuesday marks two years since the massacre at Pulse. Almost 50 people were gunned down by security guard Omar
Mateen in a three-hour rampage.

Abboud spoke to Piper Smith, head of the Pink Pistols chapter in San Diego: “She decided to take up arms two days
after Orlando because she said it was the 9/11 of [the] gay community. She couldn’t comprehend it and she genuinely
didn’t want to go outside because she felt threatened just because of who she was.”

“There is a looming fear that if it can happen in Orlando, it can happen anywhere.”

The Pink Pistols now claim to have 45 regional divisions and 10,000 mostly LGBTI people on its books. They exist for
a very simple reason: “We teach queers to shoot,” states the website.

“Gays that are armed and trained, don’t get bashed and killed,” said Jeff Bloovman, a nursing student and gun instructor
who has become something of a poster boy for the Pink Pistols.

“Jeff breaks every stereotype,” said Abboud. “He’s super buff, super butch, the straightest gay man I have ever met and
he has tons of guns in his home.”

“He spent a couple of hours showing me his guns. I couldn’t believe the number he keeps around him, I saw 35 guns,
but he wouldn’t tell me how many he had.”

“Some people might say he’s a gun nut, but I spent several days with him and he’s the sweetest, gentlest, most loving
guy you’d know. But he genuinely goes out every day and feels like he’s going to be attacked and his schtick is that if
it happens, he’s ready.”

Abboud said the message he received was that the political divisions in US society were making gay people more fearful
than they had been for some time. Others said the police could no longer be trusted to protect the LGBTI community or
they took too long to react.

“Jeff said that the threat came from the culture and climate he is now living under as well as the [homophobic] things he
has heard,” Abboud said.

“The HRC said there was more danger since Trump; that when the nation’s leader suggests or alludes to some minority
communities being more disposable than others, that sends a message.”

Hmmm.  There are 52 weeks in a year. One per week = 52 gays presumably killed for no other reason than being gay.

Assuming that number is correct, I wouldn't classify the problem as "out of control" in a country of 326 million. Not when over 1,800 are killed each year from gang violence.

Wait doesn't the majority of this group want to disarm America (only cops should have guns)?

Or is it, they want to do things that only benefit themselves.

I believe the media holds out the most extreme members of "this group" to create a narrative that serves their own purposes -- selling their "product."

I do have to say good for them.  People should be armed for protection.  Good for them.

Also, I have to say that it always amuses me when people think 50 deaths a year is huge from this, or that 500 people are killed a year with rifles.  Holy moly 500!  Several hundred in mass shootings in the past couple years!  Oh my!  Ban everything!  I mean don't get me wrong.  Death sucks, and it only takes 1 of those being your wife or parent, etc for it to matter a lot more to you, but do these people not realize how many thousands of people die every single day in this county?  From knives, spoons, falls, food, pillows, hammers, suicide, drowning, etc.  Hundreds of thousand a year from surgeries gone wrong.  Almost 100,000 a year related to alcohol.  I could go on and on.  Overall, we are a very peaceful and safe place, and this "horror of constant crime deaths" that is being pushed by the media is a joke and completely annoying.  But we all know why they really do it.....

I got no problems with this, I think more of them should be armed and we need more allies.  There are people out there that just want to beat up gays for no other reason.

Majority of the interviews that I've scene have them hating Trump so:

1) Get gun for protection from gay bashing
2) Realize they need CCW permit
3) Get CCW permit, but realize when they travel across state lines, they are once again defenseless
4) Get on board with reciprocity
5) Support president who promised to sign reciprocity bill
6) Support Trump

Best interview that I seen was Austen Fleccas about the Christian baker:

Gay guy: He has to bake the cake regardless of his customers beliefs, he's in the service industry
Fleccas: Where do you work
Gay guy: Starbucks
Fleccas: So if Trump came into your Starbucks and ordered a coffee, would you make it
Gay guy: I would get arrested for assaulting him

Well, I for one am glad that happy Americans choose to be armed.

We would not want unhappy people having firearms, certainly not a group that has significantly higher incidence of suicide and domestic violence.

The overall politics of this demographic needs to change. While I too support them for exercising their rights, the general rhetoric they use still falls very much in line with the truly toxic attitude with liberals. Seems like a lot of those in the gay community taking up arms could be the type to go completely “FUDD” against the Second Amendment culture (i.e. you only need this type of gun and nothing else).

However if people like Jeff Bloovman (I remember him from his Armed Dynamics videos on YouTube)  are taking the charge, perhaps he can truly educate these new gun owners that gun ownership rights aren’t limited to handguns or bolt action rifles.

I agree. Having lived in SoCal most of my life, many of my friends (and my wife’s friends) are gay. Funny thing is, most of my wife’s gay friends has preconceived notions about me before they met me. It was like a light switched on in their brain. They were open minded enough to understand that I am not what they perceived me to be (Homophobic, etc.). Only one of her friends never accepted me. For reasons that would take too long to explain. While I never disclosed my love of firearms to any of them, I think they understood that not all conservative white males are as bad as they have been lead to believe. I do believe most or all of them would have gone shooting with me at least once.

As far as my male gay friends were concerned, most had little interest in guns. But a few did and I took them shooting many times. Converted a few to understanding the mindset of a gun owner. Which made them realize that for the most part we are on the same side of most subjects. Just disagree on how to get there. But one friend became a Republican. Never thought that would happen.
