Ruger SP-101 Complete Trigger Job
« on: August 25, 2018, 06:20:48 PM »
Decided to do a total trigger job to my SP-101 357. Ordered a Wilson spring kit (10, 12 pound hammer springs, 8 pound trigger spring, trigger and hammer shims) from Midway and instead of sandpaper or emery cloth, used my Arkansas stone kit for polishing. Used this guide for the process:

https://www.sp101trigger.com/steps21to30.html#step27

Took about an hour to complete, including the hiccups, and the trigger is smooth and light, both single and double. Tested the primer strike reliability with 30 primed cases and all went bang. Don’t know how many pounds the trigger is but it feels like about 5 pounds on the double action pull, nice and smooth, no gritty feel. Very happy. Will be doing my SP-101 22 next!

Take a good variety of ammo to test it with if you installed lighter springs.

My .44 magnum Super Redhawk would not reliably fire some ammo with the light Wollf hammer springs.  Did give a nice trigger pull though, too bad.

Managed to do a trigger job on my Super Blackhawk decades earlier that ran just fine with stock springs.  The action (single of course) was impossibly light and smooth.  Even created a trigger stop.

Maybe double action stuff is beyond me.

Got it...yeah just in case I ordered a #12 just in case. I know it will go boom with my reloads but like you said, I need to test with factory.

I would suggest testing thoroughly in both SA and DA modes. I had a revolver once with a spring that became slightly out of adjustment and mimicked a weak hammer spring. It would ignite cartridges in SA mode all day long. But would not reliably ignite the same cartridges in DA mode. Seems that the hammer is pulled back farther in SA mode and releases sooner in DA mode. So a spring that is borderline might exhibit this same behavior.

Do you have a trigger pull gage? It would be interesting to see what the trigger pull ended up. I have one if you want to meet at the range one day.

The SP101 is an awesome pistol to shoot! Fun with magnum loads and a two finger grip.

And VERY easy to work on compared to the Smith & Wesson....

When I first got mine I did not like the way it shot. Even with changing out the grips. I gave it to my nephew 10 years ago and when I shot it again a couple of years ago I wanted it back.

The one I gave my nephew is in 9mm and I am sorry I let it go. However, I was just informed by Stangzilla that they are making them again. So I am thinking of buying one.

Nice! Hope the new trigger works out for you!

Just curious, but what made you decide to change out the stock trigger? Was it something about it that you didn’t like? Or just wanting something new?

I was very close to getting a SP101, but ended up with a S&W 686. That was mostly because what was available locally when I was ready for a revolver. Heard excellent things about both revolvers. Maybe I’ll get an SP101 in another caliber eventually.

Well the DA pull was very gritty and heavy. The SA was nice but gritty as well, even after a thorough clean and lube. Put about 300 thru it in DA. It was better but was not satisfied. After a complete disassembly, polishing, deburring, springs, shims and lube, it’s as smooth as a babies butt. The DA trigger pull is 100% better. Just hoping it will go bang with factory loads. My reloads will not be a problem. As a side note, I loaded 30 cases with just Winchester mag primers today and lit them off. They all went bang (did it in the house and about scared the crap outta the ole lady :D).

Try using rifle primers as they are usually harder than pistol primers.

BTW I see Ruger has an SP-101 Match Champion. Looks like it has a longer barrel.

About how many rounds total through that gun? I think Jerry Miculek said something like 3,000 rounds is a really good trigger job. My 686 prob only has around 400, so a long ways from that. Haha

As I started playing around with nicer aftermarket or tuned triggers, I’ve come to notice more stuff like grit and creep on stock triggers. I guess I never really noticed a having shot stock triggers on most of my guns for such a long time. I appreciate the nicer triggers more these days, like Geissele on ARs, but they don’t come cheap.
