Shooting on the Big Island
« on: October 06, 2018, 09:53:13 AM »
KIds are coming to visit this weekend and asked abt somewhere to go shoot. I haven't been a club member for several years. Anyone know where to go for one afternoon, mostly handgun. Used to be able to go down the road to the sand pit but that was a long time ago! Thanks.

16 mile marker range on Saddle road is the only public range on the island for handguns.  Anyone shooting there must have a valid Hawaii hunting license.  The only other public range is the skeet range by the Hilo transfer station but that's shotgun only.
If you and your kids don't have a hunting license your only other (legal) option is private land that's not within city limits.
All the indoor shooting ranges have since closed.

Imagine how it would be if they (admitted they) wanted to take your guns away! They all "support the Second Amendment"... and this is what we have. Gotta love it!

We don't have cities here.

I'm not familiar with that spot,
but I know where the police go to practice.
I could wipe out the majority of Hawaii county cops
when they have their "picnics".
I'm a law abiding guy, so I would not do such a thing,
nor advocate it.
We have a new Law abiding Supreme court
Hopefully our cops will obey the constitution
they swear to uphold.

Depending on the side of the island, Manuka may be an option.  Supposedly the same hunting license applies, but no one has ever seen a DLNR type checking anyone in years that I have used the spot.

Been a while since I was down there.  Entrance is mauka about .44 miles north of MM82.

Thanks everyone. To late for a hunting license. Looks like bow and arrow in the back yard!

Please ask your kids to return to the mainland and spread the word about the fascist regime we have in place here where you can't shoot a gun anywhere in the whole county if you are a visitor who isn't hunting. The land of the free...

You can shoot air rifle and pistol in your back yard legally.  Just do not let the pellet leave the property.

Three years ago I was shooting at manuka and dnlr officer asked if we had hunting license and our orange vests which we had either. They asked for our ids and took our info. We were polite and appalligetic and they were cool just ask us to get both the next time. No one on this forum does anything illegal.

I be corrected.  Had not heard of a DLNR guy around before.  I do not have an orange vest but will take my bright yellow Gadsden hat with me.    Did get a license earlier this year just in case.
