Tourist shooting
« on: October 08, 2018, 01:19:03 PM »
Hello all, had a quick search but couldn't find what i was after, will be visiting your great state for the 5th in my life all the way from Australia in this coming november, right into my shooting over here and thought i'd try and get some shooting done over in Oahu as well, whats the best place that allows tourists to shoot? I hold an Australian firearms license which i'm sure counts for nothing as its international but don't want to do the typical trigger pulling in waikiki, don't have much of an idea of your laws and regs but hear they're tighter than the mainland, local knowledge is always best i reckon, cheers guys and girls

Not sure if it's legal for non US citizens/resident aliens to posses a firearm.  Sorry don't got the time to look it up right now on the federal and state laws.

I shot over there in 2013 , so at that time there was some provision for non citizen to shoot but i assume it was under a Range officer/instructor supervision, that was in wakiki where they load/unload all firearms for you and you just squeeze the trigger, i barely understand our laws as they are written in legal jargon let alone another countries but supposedly ours are the " gold star " in firearms laws ( far from it and wish them upon no one ) but thanks for the reply mate might try and decipher some hawaii state law :)

Hawaii laws require you to register all firearms you bring into the state.  You weren't specific about whether you'd be bringing, borrowing or renting the guns you plan to use.

There's no problem with non-resident aliens possessing firearms as long as all other laws are followed.

If you can answer which guns you hope to use (own/borrow/rent), that would make answering simpler than a bunch of "if-then-else-or-if-then-else-and-if-then-else" explanations.

Good points, i wasn't specific enough, prefer to rent, taking my own firearms out of Aus isn't worth the mess it'll create, hope to rent a pistol or a semi automatic rifle ( are ar15's legal in Hawaii? ) at a range for a few hours, both firearms i can't use here at home

Thanks for the additional info.

I personally think Honolulu Firearms and Range would be what you're looking for.  They are on this forum in the Vendor's section.  You might want to make contact by starting your own thread in their section, or use the Private Messaging (PM) feature if you'd like to keep private info, such as names, dates and phone numbers.

Here's a much older thread from HFR with their rates and handgun rental models.  They stated AR-15s are in the rental stock as of 2014.

This price list was posted April 3, 2018:

All of the ammo prices look like handgun calibers.  Maybe someone else here can provide more info on the availability and cost of AR-15 ammo/rentals (i.e. HFR themselves?).

Good luck.

Your options for shooting here are:

1.  Honolulu Firearms and Range (https://www.yelp.com/biz/honolulu-firearms-and-range-honolulu)- What flapp said, but they don't allow rifle rounds (5.56mm ammo).  Their AR15s are 9mm or 22lr.
2.  X-Ring (https://xringsecurity.com) - Like HFR and about the same price, but you can shoot rifle rounds
3.  Waikiki/Oahu Gun Club (https://www.hawaiigunclub.com/) - Tourist place where you purchase package deals.  More expensive, but cheaper if you want to just shoot a few rounds out of different guns.

Now thats some info i didn't know, thanks zippz, looks like X-ring is the go, its more about developing my technique and getting some practice in rather than just blasting away for the fun of it pistols are hard to get here in Aus and i can count the number of civillian owned ar's on one hand in Victoria pretty much non existant

What dates are you here?

There’s usually one or two tour guides at the Kokohead  range, mostly Japanese. The guides own the rifles and ammo. I’m not sure who they are but often wonder how much the tourists pay.

Just make sure you go to X-Ring during the day.

If you're free on Thanksgiving day, the public range will be open, and I might be kind enough to share my guns.

Edit: Anyone else want to join in?

Hope someone here can meet up with you and “host” you at Koko Head. I’d be down to let you shot my ARs and handguns, but I think I’ll still be on the IR. If Drakiir can host you, I’ll donate some ammo.

Hope you enjoy your trip. I have a few friends in Oz who are shooters, but not sure where they live. One has a bunch of Enfields and another has Enfields and some others. One is a former tubboat captain, but now is some sort of ranch hand on a huge property. I’m sure he works hard, but he posts a bunch of pics of the wild dogs (dingos?) that he culls for work.
