Buckmark in 5.5 or 7.25 barrel
« on: November 15, 2018, 02:42:14 PM »
Looking to purchase a Buckmark 22 for bullseye target shooting. Most shooting will be done at 25 yds but there could be some 50 yd here and there. Torn between a 5.5 or 7.25 barrel. Any thoughts and advice? Tnx!
These are the 4 I’m considering...
Buckmark contour 7.25 and 5.5” or the field target 5.5 or 5.5” with threaded barrel.  :shaka:

If you are going to compete get the threaded barrel and put a compensator on it. If not, I wouldn’t pay the extra money for the threaded barrel.

The difference in accuracy between the short and long barrel will not make much difference between 25 and 50 yards. But it will add some accuracy. Not so much because the barrel length but because the sight radius is longer on the longer barrel. Assuming you use the iron sights. I think you should try and find one of each barrel length to hold and feel the balance. I prefer a 5.5” barrel, but I shoot better with the 7.25” barrel. The 5.5” barrel feels better balanced to me but the added weight of the 7.25” barrel helps me hold a little steadier.

Like all things there are trade offs. If you are going to add a red dot or other type sight and not use irons I would probably choose the 5.5”. If irons, I would go with the 7.25” barrel. These are my opinions only so YMMV. You might also consider a pistol that the barrel is easily removed and after market or different length barrels are available. For instance the S&W Victory has easily replaceable barrels. Not sure about the Buckmark? That way you can have the best of all worlds. JMHO

Let me know which one decide to get.

10-4 will let you know which one.... thanks for the advice. Buckmark is real easy to change barrels. Two screws on top, one on the bottom. Not as easy as the mark IV but still easy....

I’m glad to hear the Buckmark you can easily change the barrels. A lot of us have multiple barrels and change them out depending on what you want to shoot that day. After you decide on the barrel(s) you want I will suggest you invest in a good set of target stocks. While the Buckmark might feel good in your hand, a good set of target stocks makes a huge difference in handling and stability.

Nice!!! Since you ordered the threaded barrel, buy a nice compensator. Believe it or not it will make a difference if you want to shoot timed events and other types of competition.

Now you have to let us know which ammo it likes the best and how well you shoot with it. Are you going to get an optic for it or shoot with the irons?

Will do! Wanted to get some Federal target auto fodder but read some bad things about it. Will probably try some anyway and give it a fair shake. Looking at Tandemkross comp. Only thing I don’t like about it is the diameter is .920 and the barrel is .900 (yeah I’m a little anal about things like that but from what I’ve read it a great comp). The other is tactical solutions. They have a comp at .900.
As for optics will prob run irons for now. I did get a cheap optic awhile back. Might try it out on the buckmark and see what happens. If I like the optic route will invest in a Burris fastfire or equivalent......

The Federal Auto Match used to be the bargain of the century. When it was first introduced it was accurate, clean, functioned well and generally good quality ammo at a low price. Since it’s introduction the quality has gone down. Along with the quality the accuracy and functioning has gotten worst. I bought a few boxes of the early release from YG for $18.95. Then a year later I saw it on sale at YG again for $24.95. I bought a bunch of it at that time because .22 was starting to get hard to find. I always try out new batches of .22 when I get it because different lots can and does shoot differently. Even the best and most expensive ammo is this way. This second batch was crap. I thought I must have made a mistake with the first batch I bought. Went to the range and compared the two and the first batch was far superior to the second batch. Not just different, but even visually there was a huge difference. And as you found, I am not the only one who found this out. However, like with any .22 ammo and gun combo, you never know how a certain ammo shoots out of a particular gun until you try it. As much as I cringe when I am writing this, I will even recommend trying the worst of the worst Remington Golden Bullets and Thunderbolt ammo. Remington has a very poor reputation with their .22 ammo. Dirty, poor quality, not consistent between shots, etc. But lately I have been reading that some very credible people in the firearms industry have been getting excellent results with Remington bottom of the barrel .22 ammo. So it looks like they have raised their QC on their .22 ammo. So try this as well. The Golden Bullets come in a bucket and are cheap when packaged this way. I also recommend you try CCI Mini Mags and Standard Velocity ammo. These two seem to shoot really well out of most guns. If you find CCI Blazer I suggest you try this as well. It has a good reputation like Mini Mags and SV. I finally standardized on Blazer (low cost) for plinking, CCI SV (moderate cost) for target practice and SK and Eley (expensive) match ammo for when I want to get the most out of my guns that can shoot. I own way too much .22 ammo.

I know, I know.  Don't really want to hi jack in any way but our friend Kimo in Vegas just realeased a .22 ammo comparison via chrono.
