Thanks Stang for all the videos. It took me a while to watch them all. My comments on the .357 Magnum as a SD round are a big , as you already know.

Pennsylvania man kills 679-pound male black bear at 5 yards with .357 handgun: report

https://www.foxnews.com/great-outdoors/man-kills-679-pound-male-black-bear-at-5-yards-with-357-handgun

So seeing the results out of a carbine just reinforces my love for the cartridge and makes me want a leveraction in .357 even more. Before I go out and get one tho, I want to shoot the leveraction I have more to gain better practice with it. Just like shooting a revolver, the hold is a little different, muscle memory is a little different and the buckhorn rear sight is a little different so until I get comfy with all of that I think I’ll wait a bit.

I also have love for the 45-70 round as that is the first really big and heavy projectile cartridge I ever shot. It is an impressive round to say the least. While I don’t own any rifles with that cartridge, I intend to buy one some day as well. My only problem? I can’t decide between a single shot rifle or a leveraction.

The Big Horn Armory leveraction in 500 S&W is an impressive piece in and of itself. It is a finely made lever gun. Not only beautiful wood, fit and finish, but has a very smooth action. And full power loads kick like a mule in it. It was very accurate and I can see it as a hunting gun for sure. Especially in bear country. I would not feel insecure in bear country with any gun that shoots that 500 S&W round. I am lucky that an acquaintance let me shoot his, though my shoulder wasn’t happy.
Put the .357 Mag lever action on your wishlist with the wifey!   ;D  I was browsing websites looking for one this morning.  While they are available, the ones that I want either aren't in stock or places like Academy have them, but only in store purchase.  I was serious about ordering one maybe 4-5 years ago.  During that time, I had a couple of LGS searching and they couldn't find one.  They are available, but usually the "premium" that are like $200-300 more than the base models that I want.  Anyways, let me know when you get yours and I'll help you break it in.

You and the black powder guys love them larger caliber guns.  I think it was the 45-120 and another 45-elephantgunsize that were pretty darn impressive.   ;D

I love comparison videos as long as they compare things equally. This one did a good job I thought. I thought the 100 yard to 200 yard comparison pretty drastic. I was not expecting the 44 Magnum to drop that much. My friend’s 44 magnum Marlin bangs our gong pretty good at 100 yards.
I like his methods and thought process for comparing different guns.  Like he and you mention, it's tough to get a true apples and apples comparison.  Even in semi-autos, folks automatically think proj weight is everything, but l like that he knows that velocity plays a bigger factor in energy.  It's all the years of physics from school.

If money was more free flowing, I'd expand to a .44 Mag revolver and lever action too.  I don't particularly enjoy .44 Mag revolvers, especially in the shorter barreled guns, but the lever actions are super mild.

SNIP
That was a pretty cool video!

I was wondering about if the course of fire included a reload (it did) and how he would do it.  That certainly looked challenging.  The left handed probably would have made me at least take my time.

A good friend is a det with a smaller PD just outside Houston.  I've shot their qualifications for handgun, carbine and shotgun.  I've also shot their handgun one with a revolver, which I sucked.  He's actually tried to qualify with a revolver as they still allow officers to carry revolvers.  They allow officers to carry from a list of approved firearms and it's a pretty wide range.  He ended up qualifying with a revolver, but it was interesting to watch.

This guy is a dead ringer for a "bigger brother" of a member here.  Not only appearance, but also preferences and thoughts about firearms.

This video is more "talking story" than on performance and other information, but some good points he discusses.

I wonder what the diameter of his gong is at 200 yards? Whatever it is, anyone who can hit out to 200 yards offhand with buckhorn style sights is outstanding in my book.  :worship:

He came up with some strong arguments for the levergun. If you practice enough to operate the lever without having to leave your shoulder I see his point. Not much difference in speed. I don’t have a lot of experience with levers yet. I’ll let you know how my practice sessions go.

I miss the steel that used to be scattered all over the rifle range. That was one of my favorite things to shoot. The chest size plates were something I would shoot often with ARs with red dot as well as irons. Was my method of verifying after zeroing on paper.  Too bad they don’t allow lever actions in pistol calibers in the silhouette range.

Years ago when I was in the Air Force I was required to certify yearly using the security police
(SP)standards. I was not an SP,  but my world wide mobility status required a certain level of competency
with a rifle in a variety of positions, handedness, and use of cover, all timed by an instructor.
This video is a joke!  If that is all cops have to do,  no wonder
they "spray and pray".   You could almost use a bolt action rifle and do just as well.
I can cycle my P1917 PDQ.
Admittedly I was in the military and not
playing cops and bandit, but really, things in the real world are
not that nice and clean.
Cops scare me.

It is well known that police are woefully under trained in the use of their firearms. Which like you said is the reason they have to fire 15 rounds to score one hit. I have no formal training so I can’t say I would do any better given the same circumstances.

Looks super cool, but anything not semi-auto for home defense is a no go for me.

if you get it chambered in 45/70, it'll only take one round to do the job.   ;)

Will be adding a 30-30 to the collection soon.  Believe it's a blued Winchester.  I'm still down for a .357 Mag level action, but been focused on a couple of AR builds as well as some new handguns.  I knew once I broke the RapBack seal, that this would happen.

Lever action, bolt action, even a falling block action single shot.  Holding ANY gun is way better than just holding your boto.
