Stupid 9mm Titegroup, with data
« on: January 13, 2019, 03:49:27 PM »
If you didn't see my first "Was this stupid? 9mm Titegroup" post. Please read that first to see the back story.

Was this stupid? Yes. Did I at least get something out of this dumb endeavor? Yes. Am I alive? As far as I can tell, yeah, I'm still here.

DISCLAIMER: Please do not replicate what I am about to share with you as your outcome could be extremely far different than mine, and for the fact I almost... who am I kidding? I COMPLETELY disregarded Hodgdon's load data calculator. I am just here to share the data that I got at the range today.

Started from 3.5 grains thru 5.2 grains of Titegroup with all the following information being constant.

Press: Dillon 550C
Brass: Mixed (Blazer, Federal, PPU, PMC)
Bullet: Everglades 124gr FMJ Recessed Base
Primer: Winchester SPP
COAL: 1.140"
Crimp: .375"

Test guns: Glock 19 Gen 5 4" barrel, SIG P365 3" barrel

Chronograph: Competition Electronics set about 5ft away

Did not chrono 3.5grs - 4.1grs, and I was an idiot and did not throw my 4.2gr and 4.4gr loads back into the Ziploc after looking for over pressure signs.

Excuse my lack of notebook and typing. All data collected are in the pictures below starting from 4.2grs going all the way to 5.2grs...... I can just imagine everyone shaking there head at me already lol. Dave gave weird looks all morning because I was writing on Ziplocs also lol. Thank you Dave btw for helping me out with a couple strings.

Velocities are written on the plastic bags in the pictures for now. I will type them out later when I post pictures of the 5.0gr and 5.2gr close ups of the case heads and rims on a caliper.

Last week, I loaded 50 rounds of .223 only to realize I loaded 62gr bullets instead of 52gr bullets. My penance was that I had to pull all 50 bullets. My double checks led me to catch my mistake before I blew my head off.

You are close to +P velocities and under +P+. Was that your goal is to reproduce and +P loads? Like I said on the other thread, I don't shoot +P so I have no experience with them. I do shoot fairly warm rifle loads. Do you have access to Quick Loads?

My goal originally to find a good margin of error for progressive loading. Before obtaining this Titegroup from my friend I've only used CFE Pistol and Longshot from Young Guns. I like to practice shooting with Winchester NATO 124gr rounds. I was just curious to see how far over the published data I could push the powder. Which is why I climbed the ladder from 3.5 grains. I'll stick to CFE Pistol for 1200fps+ loads. I will start loading Titegroup progressively between 4.5gr - 4.6 giving me 1150fps-ish. My wife likes the bunny fart loads, so the under 4.0gr charges I'll give to her. I got alot of this stuff to burn.

Well since there is no going back, I thought I'd just share the experience with everyone. My DISCLAIMER again, to anyone who wishes to use this other than for data collection.

I completely understand that I was considered "+p" as soon as I went over Hodgdon published data.

some of those primers are FLAT
what do the 5.0 and 4.8 look like?

Flattened primers were more severe on the P365 with 5.2gr. Might be from different headspacing between the throat of the chamber to the breach face. The Glock primer flow just started to make it's way into the firing pin indent at 5.2gr.

I have the 4.8gr and 5.0gr cases posted here. A closer picture of the 5.0gr cases on my first "Was this stupid? 9mm Titegroup" post.

Did you clock some NATO 124gr rounds????

No. The only factory ammo I had in my can was bulk ammo Blazer Brass 124gr FMJs. They clocked in at only at roughly 1030fps out of the Glock. I have the readings in my book. They advertise 1090fps out of a 4" barrel.

I need to read the NATO rounds, forgot to bring them that day. Winchester advertises 1200fps at the muzzle but do not specify barrel length tested. Watched a couple of YouTube videos of folks chronoing them getting 1200fps out of their NATO rounds with a Glock 19, but I gotta verify with the chrono I have.

I will probably do another data string using CFE Pistol next time I make it to the range since I haven't done that yet. Along with seeing how my chrono will read NATO 9mm.

Well for one, thank you for sharing. I'm glad nothing bad happened aside from flattened primers. I do load for pistol but I wouldn't call myself an expert at it. I do regularly load over "book max" for rifles. I will say different powders will yield higher velocities and still be within in the same pressure range as other powders.
