Alcohol and Tobacco will be affected by prolonged government shutdown (Read 2682 times)

RSN172

I was at Walmart Hilo this evening and the cashier told the woman buying a pack of cigarettes that when the Walmart stock runs out, they won’t be able to buy any more for resale because the department that handles the tax stamps is shutdown.  I did about 10 minutes of research on the subject after I got home and what she said is true.  I don’t drink or smoke so that doesn’t affect me, but I see perhaps a money-making opportunity here if Hawai’i starts running low on these items.  The state of Minnesota is already being affected in some areas.  One bar, ironically named “Independent” had to close because it could not renew its liquor tax license.  One cigarette distributor purchased $2m in tax stamps in case of a prolonged shutdown.

You smokers better stock up.

A great opportunity to quit drinking and smoking lol.
"The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."

Does this mean we can buy suppressors without a tax stamp?

Trump said refunds will go out, I'm calling BS.  But it is to early to tell.

Trump said refunds will go out, I'm calling BS.  But it is to early to tell.

A good percentage of filers do so electronically. Refunds go out in about a week.  There's no person in the middle to hold up the process.  There are audits later if returns are flagged, but for most, it's a completely electronic transaction.  Many websites allow online submissions for 1040EZ/1040A without any complicated schedules.

Most of the W2, 1098 and 1099 forms are transmitted to the IRS electronically, too. They'll know if your return matches those or not.

Also read online that a few thousand IRS workers were called back purely to handle refunds.

Just read that some new cars and trucks will not be able to be sold because of not having EPA certificates due to government shutdown.  Can't afford a new vehicle so that doesn’t affect me either.  There are some benefits to being poor, but not poor enough to qualify for SNAP benefits which are being affected.
