Second hand smoke (meaning people exposed to smoke but do not smoke themselves) kills 4 times as many innocent people as firearm murders.  I am much more likely to die of second hand smoke (my mom smoked when I was a kid until I left the house for college) than I will from a firearm.

Im always amazed there are tons of anti-gun bill and zero anti smoking bills.    I'll take any anti cigarette bill over a anti gun bill any day.

This Dr. knows best....
from the article,
"Creagan says smokers are horribly addicted and need freedom from enslavement."
I call BS!  I smoked two packs a day for over ten years and quit on my own, cold turkey, 38 years ago.
People are responsible for what they do, good or bad.
The only thing I hate about Hawaii is the people I have to live with,  that think they
know how other people should live their lives.
I despise Democrats. I despise their policies as they are anti-freedom.
I oppose any ban against anything.  I oppose the Hawaii government, period.

As a former smoker, I can say "Sure, ban the sales of cigarettes".
Next it will be a ban on Cigars (Tom/Brendon input ?)

Also banning purchase of alcohol on DUI's. Anybody ever get convicted while innocent ?
Soon to be followed by no Roast Pork (too fatty), no coffee (caffeine's bad for you), and metro-sexual attire only so we don't offend anybody.

Just another step in other bans like

Move to Arizona.  There are places there that are not unbearably hot, but can get down to the 30s.  AZ is where I plan to be headed in a couple of years.

Constitutionally, I don't see a problem with banning smoking.  And IIRC for booze, 1 amendment stated no booze (prohibition) then a few more down the list it says what ever your state law says (another amendment added).

I do think there should be a ZERO drinking and driving.  I know lots of guys who say "nah, I never had that much" and drive home.  So lets penalize sober drivers for the action of drunk drivers (how gun control works).

But we all know which companies pay lawmakers.  I guess the Hawaii ones never get their check for 2019 from the Malboro Man.

".. .they're going to die, half of them are going to die if they keep smoking, and we can prevent that."

Wow! I'll start smoking if you can promise me I'll be in the half that don't die! Who knew? Was this published in a peer-reviewed journal? Doubt it because this is the first I've heard of an eternal life outcome for product consumption.

"While Creagan would prefer the ban be immediate and total, he realizes beneficiaries of those tax dollars, the UH Cancer Research Center, can't go cold-turkey. That is why the ban would be unrolled in phases."

What?! What happened to the "if it saves even one life" mantra? Oh, that's only for taking guns from law-abiding citizens, I forgot. Priorities and all that.

"We'll be the first state to be cigarette-free and I think that's really cool."

Just like the entire U.S. was alcohol-free when alcohol was banned! Oh, goodie, I can hardly wait. I'm sure no one will violate this law! TSA screeners confiscating any tobacco products on all flights destined for Hawaii. That'll be fun!

"Progressively bans the sale of cigarettes by raising the minimum age of persons to whom cigarettes may be legally sold to 30 years of age in 2020, 40 years of age in 2021, 50 years of age in 2022, 60 years of age in 2023, and then 100 years of age in 2024."

What?! The people 100 and over get to keep smoking?! The horror! Think of the children! I call age discrimination!!

It's so sad to think that people really are this stupid, but they are... and they are our elected "leaders"... both Democrat and Republican. And all for our own good!

agreed, but it might reveal the 2-faced nature of our legislators, if they kill this bill because of respect for individuals' rights, or in the face of 10-to-1 or even 5-to-1 testimony, but when it's an anti-2A, anti-Bill-of-Rights, nooooooo, they don't care if it's 100-to-1 against, still ram-rodded right up our okoles.

it'll be interesting to watch and see, that's all, spectacle, cheap entertainment.

I think a much more realistic idea would be to ban smoking in public.

I know Tokyo had a problem and they did this. IIRC they had a huge problem with cigarette butts littering the streets.

I remember seeing an old Soko Ga Shiritai episode on KIKU in the 90s addressing cigarette butt litter. Not sure if it was legislation or government PSAs, but they tried to convert people to nicotine gum to reduce second-hand smoke. Unintended consequence was gum litter on the streets which ate into the labor budget - takes longer to scrape gum than to sweep a butt. Just my $0.02.

I'm for individual rights and as long as it doesn't interfere with another person's rights.  There shouldn't be law for blanket bans on smoking.  Government offices can prohibit smoking indoors and outdoors for safety like around flammable gas.  Private businesses can prohibit on their own.

Simple.

This is a stupid bill that encroaches upon individual rights. If a person wants to do it without affecting others health . Fine. As long as I don't pay for their bills or cigarettes.
But please if you are going to smoke in your car and are done don't flick your butt out the window. That stuff doesn't disappear on its own.

Consider this a money making opportunity, you know, like Prohibition.  Some guys from Italy made a lot of money back then.

Things will be even worse if we get Medicare for all.  There will be laws banning unsafe stuff because government is now responsible for your health.

you know, I think you got something there.  remember when they called for fireworks ban, it only resulted in increased taxes.  think they'll just end up increasing the taxes on cigarettes as their "solution"?  after all, it's all democrats.
