Enough lip flapping.
I wanna see some ballistic jello.
What flavor? I like strawberry.
What, Me Worry?

I'm hoping to have something up this year lol. It is one of my next projects. I've just been enjoying smacking steel lately.

My friends and I are trying to get a set up made where we can just remold 10% ballistics gel. It's not cheap and I for one definitely don't want to just throw those things away.

It's definitely gonna be a long term thing because trying to find the optimum velocity expansion and penetration window at handgun distances (muzzle thru 50yds), is definitely gonna take some trial and error, even more so because I'm trying to do it with cheap JHPs that aren't meant for this type of work.

Sorry for the lipping Dave lol. But that is what I indent to try and accomplish. I'll let you know what it taste like when I get around to it lmao.

How about shooting this stuff instead of jello?
https://www.amazon.com/Rectorseal-81881-5-Pound-Duct-Compound/dp/B008A3UG9E/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1T28O5SNSWRZ&keywords=duct+sealing+compound&qid=1554315257&s=gateway&sprefix=duct+sealing%2Caps%2C265&sr=8-4#customerReviews

It would be easier to handle and reuse.
Just shoot a reference round like HPD 124 gold dot to establish a performance standard.
Then compare whatever to that standard.
What, Me Worry?

A buddy and I have done the ballistic gel making and testing thing.  Yeah, it's surprisingly expensive.  One lesson learned was on the coloration of the gel.  The recipe that my buddy made ended up turning out light brown, but opaque.  Not sure why he did that, the recipe, or whatever.  But it made it harder (or nearly impossible) to see the channel from the side.  We had to cut it open to see better.  A more translucent block would have been much better.

But we did testing much like you seem to be planning.  All sorts of different JHP and 9 vs  40.  Even some off the shelf stuff as well as some .300 Blk HP stuff.  Was very fun and good to see that kind of stuff in person and try for yourself.

Anyways, please be safe.  Don't blow yerself up. . .

There are lots of vids on youtube about testing with factory JHP box ammo.  Some even shoot thru clothing.  But none did what I suggested above.  Shoot thru thick jacked, cellphone in jeans pocket, XM193 thru level III plates, etc...

This is why I choose gold dot with Federal JHP a close 2nd.  Testing was good and HPD uses them and the price is decent.

Lots of videos of folks shooting all sorts of plates, vests, etc.  There were a bunch of folks testing through all sorts of barriers too.  Like wind shields, drywall, etc.  I think the revolver thread had some videos where a guy set up something like clothing, pork ribs, oranges, etc.  Pretty interesting tests.

I was thinking of buying some cheaper steel and ceramic plates to do some testing (well, more experimenting), but never got around to it.

For what? Paperweight? Since you don’t own any firearms.

If you want, I’ll sell for $50 per box.  :P  ;D

GD in 9 and 223. Already had federal and shot it up to use it up. 3 boxes 9mm.

1st pistol so didn't know how much I really need.  Still pissed at TSA for taking 1 round.

How come HPD switching?  Seen vids comparing them and almost same results.  But GD was cheaper and more readily available.

It's ok.  You still have more ammo than Mac. . .

Who knows why HPD is switching.  Gov't contracting and procurement isn't always about what's best performing, best value, what the department wants, etc.  In fact, it often can actually be counter to common sense.

As long as I have 1 round, I have more than mac because he doesn't not own any firearms, ammo, or reloading equipment.

the TSA person that stole the one round has more ammo than me

my sources tell me they are switching to bonded federal due to barrier performance
I think an additional reason is the fact that they can acquire FMJ training ammo that performs similarly to the hollow points...
