"Under the bill, gun owners are required to report lost, stolen or destroyed firearms to the county police department

within 24 hours of discovering

the loss, theft or destruction of the weapon."

I predict no one will ever be charged & convicted of this "common sense gun law."

"I reported it within 24 hours of discovering if was missing. Last time I remember seeing it was 3 years ago when I cleaned it and locked it in my gun safe. Last night, I noticed it was no longer in the safe."

Nobody can honestly refute such a claim unless you were careless enough to tell someone more than 24 hours ago you noticed. Otherwise, how would anyone prove you had knowledge of something before you say you knew it?

Ige said, "This will help police officers in situations involving firearm ownership and possession, and it will protect firearm owners if their lost or stolen firearm was used in a crime.”

LOL! Right.     If you report your gun stolen within 2 days after it turns up at a crime scene, did that report help you or make you look that much more suspicious?

Who isn't going to think, "Oh, right. You reported it stolen, and it just happens to be found next to a body the night before.  I'm sure that's exactly what happened."

This is to catch people who are ignorant of the law.  The police will say "when did you last see it?" and if they say "I had it over the weekend" and its now Wednesday, too bad, going to jail.

But we all know you dont talk to the police.  If I had a firearm here and it got stolen, I'd call a lawyer and let them report it.

this law isn't about protection its about confiscation and turning victims into criminals

they should do a similar bill but instead of firearms - cars

Nope. When he last saw it doesn't matter. What does matter is when he discovered it was not where he left it. If he says, "I noticed it was missing last weekend," THEN he's in trouble.

If he was unaware of the theft/loss, cannot hold him accountable for anything, even if he didn't report it.

What a monumental waste of taxpayer money.
There should be a law requiring disclosure of wasted tax money within 24 hours.

I made a mistake, this was actually a progun bill.

In my abundance of optimism, I'd say that will work after the arrest by the police who dont know the law and lost of job and emptying the savings to pay for an attorney who will eventually win the case but for some reasons the name will forever stay on the background check list so that a permit or firearm can never be obtained again despite numerous appeals.  Then 45 years later the supreme court will rule it unconstitutional and they will dig up your long dead body to allow you to get a firearm permit and start the 3000 day waiting period to get a single shot backward shooting muzzle loader.

I always appreciate seeing someone who can admit to their mistakes and come to terms with reality. Good job.
