There's also reports of drug and alcohol use in the protestor camps...on the sacred ground.

I don't see the issue of desecration.  Although the telescope is huge it's not damaging the land and the mountain is being cared for.  Pele built the islands for the Hawaiian explorers to populate.  Building a telescope allows us to explore the stars so that someday people will live on other planets in the universe.  The telescope also provides jobs for Hawaiians and funds their education and programs.

It's clear that military use and bombing would be desecration.  Building a Disneyland on top of the mountain could also be considered desecration.  But building a telescope seems to fit in with Hawaiian culture and betterment of it's people.

....
I agree.
The ancient Hawaiians explored their way over here.
The Hokulea explored their way back, and more.
The telescope is just another way to explore.

Monday had about 300, today est about 800, I bet tomorrow 1200 or more.  Longer they wait, worse it will get.  Ige is on BI but he won't go talk to the protesters.

At his press conference he claimed to be in contact with at least some of the "protest" "leaders". He claimed that there are various factions, demanding different things, some of whom have not responded to requests for communication. It would seem, given that fact, that there is only one course of action possible... clear them out. His cop out is that his priority is "to make sure no one in the community is hurt". So he's thinking if they start mass arrests and/or physical removals that some "protestors" will turn violent and hurt cops, and/or that in response to attacks some cops will hurt "protestors"? If so, then there is only one answer: do nothing, ever. Don't build the telescope. Give all land back to the people who claim that some randomly designated genetic percentage of some kind of DNA entitles them to ownership and to dictate who may or may not any longer "own" any land here or even reside or visit here. Sounds like a plan. Way to go ignoramus coward.

Where were all these people during the planning phase?

Not like a contract was awarded overnight.

Couldn’t they just send the Chinatown HPDs and have them issue tickets to the protesters for blocking the road?

Quick way to meet quota.
I think, therefore I am armed.

That really wouldn't be a surprise. A few heinekens and that ancient Hawaiian medicinal plant, marijuana.

If old people, and I am one of them, break the law, they deserve to get arrested.

True, but I am talking optics here. What the government doesn't want is to give more people reason to come up and protest which would make everything harder. More force and more arrests aren't always the answer. When dealing with a peaceful protest, sometimes the best option is to wait them out. Its not hard to imagine how bad things could turn out of a police riot line starts moving in.

Heck, maybe this is all a distraction and they are taking up all the equipment up a dirt road on the back side of the mountain.

This has been going on for 10 years.  How long do you want to wait?  It is like a cancer.  The longer you wait, the worse it will get.

The protest has been going on for 10 years?  The protest will get a lot worse if the cops (AKA the government) goes in there with pepper spray and swinging batons.

All it takes is one or two zealous protestors to come out swinging a weapon at the cops and the cops respond accordingly to make this thing blow up. Imagine some aunty getting hit in the face with a pepper ball on accident because a cop was shooting at the violent protestor amongst them. A big brawl starts, lawsuits, hospital bills, workman's comp, lawsuits, more protestors, more violence.

I think the government is smart taking their time here. They are treating the protestors with a lot of respect which is smart on many levels. A lot of the cops there know a lot of the protestors and they don't want tensions among a smaller community inflamed there.

If the solution is to wait, then how long?  The summit is closed so all astronomers and support staff are unemployed, and in turn other businesses will be affected.  Valuable research time is being wasted and is costly.  Some of that research is season dependant.  Very expensive equipment can breakdown if not constantly maintained.  Hawaiians that aren't part of the protest can't practice their religion there.  Millions will be spent on law enforcement.  The hundreds or thousands of protestors are damaging the environment.

If they all wear mask and dress in all black, the "protestors" can do what ever they want. Even assault people.

Where the ball was was dropped was not going after anyone who is blocking the road right away and continue to do so. And keep the road clear. Can protest a long as not blocking the road.

Another reason why i never vote ige or any rep in my district. So i can grumble.

Yes.  Go look it up if you don't believe it has been dragging on that long.  The government will not be able to out wait the protesters.
If you cannot out wait them and the road needs to be opened, what do you suggest if you cannot use force?  You cannot reason with or convince them to let it get built.

In any case, this shows that the government is powerless to try and confiscate guns in America.  So all the Democrats who want to repeal the 2A or outright take guns, lots of luck.

That's the underlying problem.  There is no middle ground for the people trying to literally stop the TMT from being built.  if they allow it, they lose the fight.

You can't reason with someone who is unreasonable.  After 10 years, all reasonable compromises should have been exhausted.  It's time to push through or throw in the towel.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

They are there.  In fact, yesterday news said state brought in more and lua trucks are now servicing them twice a day since an estimated 1200 people were there on the weekend.
