Me and my partners founded the Hawaii Firearms Coalition to change the 2A environment in Hawaii. We focus on Hawaii issues and leave the National stuff to the national organizations. We focus on three areas:
1. Legal action - file and support lawsuits
2. Legislation - oppose/support firearms laws
3. Grassroots Activism - get people active and doing things
I noticed in the past that there was a lot of foundational problems with the gun rights movement here. You can't build a movement on a weak foundation or else everything crumbles down. This is what I saw:
1. Reactive and it's a last minute scramble to rally everyone when a bad gun control law is proposed - ie handgun ban.
2. Bad communication - most people don't know what's going on
3. Lack of knowledge - people don't know what to do.
4. Lack of support - A few people work hard while others just watch.
5. In fighting- between people, clubs, and businesses.
6. Lack of motivation - feeling of hopelessness
HIFICO was formed to overcome these issues through long term solutions by being proactive, developing the infrastructure, and education. As a coalition, we work to unite the community, businesses, and clubs to includes third parties. We have a four year plan to develop the foundation to build Hawaiis gun rights movement on.
As a grassroots organization, we encourage and support individual's and organizations to work on their own 2a projects. The community doesn't support HIFICO. Instead HIFICO supports the community effort. We provide education and I show examples of what you should be doing on your own. I believe in leading by example and hope everyone sees that. Everything we do and everything we post emphasizes activism and responsibility.
We don't have one specific goal because we have to serve many interests among the 100 businesses and clubs and thousands of people. That being said, one of my goals is to have CCW in four years.
