You might want to do research on the history of Okinawa and not just depend on what the Governor of Okinawa and the media state. In many cases, they don’t really have much of a choice for many reasons.

In many cases, the people of Okinawa actually asked to move the troops from on area to another, so it’s not like the US is building more bases as opposed to replacing in different areas. Then there’s also the program to move (most of) the Marines to Guam.

You would do well to get FACTS instead of turning this to fit your narrative. And YES, I have first hand knowledge of what I spoke of above.

And hope you Merry Christmas! Take a break and chill my man.

I do not doubt and greatly respect your first hand experience.

My post regarding to Okinawa was not meant to be the Bible with respect to the relationship between Okinawa and the US military.  It is also a good diplomatic gesture by the US to redeploy its marines to US held, instead of foreign territory.

However, I also have first hand accounts from many Okinawan nationals who don't like the US military on their soil and hate the fact Japan wants US military assets stationed in Okinawa rather than Japan.  The underlying reason for both Okinawans and Japan with respect to this issue, of where the US bases should be stationed, being they both do not want to be in harms way should a conflict that involves the US arise.

You’re talking to Okinawans. Many don’t consider themselves Japanese. Their history and relationship to “Japan” is long and one with much hate. Who took over who, etc. Okinawa is part of Japan and there are many bases elsewhere in Japan. Is Okinawa treated like a bastard stepchild? Yeah, I can see it. But that’s their thing.

Then try talking to the thousands who are employed by the US Gov’t or businesses depends on the military to survive. They are reassured by relatives for “Okinawan pride” mindset, but quietly will tell you that they support the US military in Okinawa. I’m not saying one is right, but there’s always many sides and not always the public one.

Only if you hold the mistaken belief that "Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives" is synonymous with the government.

Well, take a look around, such people with believes such as theirs's are and will forever will be part of the US government from now on.

You need to learn that the PEOPLE in government are not in office forever, with the exception of Supreme Court Justices.  Maybe you see the difference between criticizing a PRESIDENT versus suggesting the US, as a nation, is evil.

Based on your interpretation, tell that to the many Americans who proport and make blanket statements that North Korea, Iran, Russia, and China are all evil regimes.

I think you know the difference, but it's easier to troll when you jumble up the concepts.  Kind of like talking about illegal immigration and purposefully omitting "illegal" to reframe the argument.

You could be easily guilty of the same thing.   :shaka:

I am glad you made that distinction, as it should be made to balance the understanding of the situation.

There is a huge problem with a thread that says "The USA is great/prove me wrong". It is a sophist trap, because if someone dares to bring up a point that contradicts the premise then everyone else can accuse them of saying that the USA is terrible (or whatever the opposite of great is). This thread is a jingoistic circle jerk on whoever is silly enough to want to stand in the middle and have hot loads of bloviation rain down upon them.

I would say it's more great than bad.  I've been to only 1 other country (Taiwan) and can see where we can learn from them and they can learn from us.

Taiwans health care sucks
Taiwan has a class system (rich stay rich, poor stay poor.  Little opportunity to move up) Same goes with education, poor don't go to college or can afford tutors
Taiwan doesn't any crackheads walking around (better drug control)
Taiwan has way less crime (tougher on criminals, but they do have not as much rights)

Just to name a few

"Great" is subjective anyway.  Unless everyone agrees on what defines greatness, opposing minds will never be swayed.

Providing for the common defense does not mean establishing military bases around the World.
Your opinion, no more.

Are you defining US borders as being located outside of the continental US?
Now you are just making crap up, I said there was no mention of borders in the common defense declaration.

You are as bad as that fish eye character with the arguing.  I knew it was a mistake to reply to you.

So Kuleana, I’m curious. You say that the US is not the greatest country in the world. And you said that China will overtake the US eventually. But which country, in your opinion, is currently the greatest country in the world? And what exactly makes it the greatest country in the world? I’m curious.  ???

That is a hard question to objectively answer, since the criteria from any person would mostly vary based on their own preferences.  However, if it were possible to narrow the criteria to only those characteristics that can be quantitatively measured (which is almost impossible as well), the following is list of characteristics that I would use to measure a nation's greatness.  Each nation would be ranked by each criterion to each other moderated by country size and level of overall development.

Justice/Personal Liberties
1. Rule of law
2. Due process
3. Unalienable human rights

Government
1. Inflation control
2. Unemployment/Underemployment control
3. Interest rate stability
4. Budget deficits
5. National debt
6. Business regulations

Economics
1. Equal employment opportunity
2. Equitable distribution of wealth
3. GDP
4. Poverty

Education
1. Equal educational opportunity
2. Literacy
3. Math/Science proficiency

Health and Human Services
1. Equal access to healthcare
2. Government assistance for the needy/elderly/disabled/etc. (i.e., food clothing, shelter, healthcare)

Public Safety
1. Crime rates
2. Police abuses/brutality
3. Incarcerations

National Security
1. Terrorist attacks
2. Foreign invasions from abroad
3. Foreign wars participated (direct/indirect/proxy)

The list above is not meant to be an exhaustive list, as there are many other items that could be added to the list.  As to the question which country is the greatest today, even with the list I compiled is still trivial.  Personally, I think Singapore is the greatest country to live in based on the above criteria.

When measuring both US and China to my list, the only area I see the US having a great advantage is with justice/personal liberties and marginal edge in health and human services.  China does a slightly better job in running their country, great job in maintaining a more equitable economy, and excellent education.  China's public safety and national security are only better than the US because US scores lower on the metrics that compile both items.

Once again, this list is very subjective on my part and I know opinions will differ.

Singapore has a higher debt-to-GDP ratio than the US (based on stats thru Dec 2018).

Singapore:  112.20%  (previous year: 111%)

US:  106.10%  (previous year:  105%)

FYI.

Good to know.

Personally, for now their nation is a much safer place to live, no drugs, no illegal immigration, good education, and no global wars to be worried about.

I have no problem with their laws.

Some appear ethnocentrically excessive, but they are effective in maintain good public order.  Their use of corporal punishment and zero tolerance policy on drugs is something other countries should think about incorporating.

I'm sure the cancer patients who benefit from cannabis use would differ with that draconian approach.

Anyone who believes in "zero tolerance" regarding crimes that don't victimize anyone needs to take a step back and reexamine his value system.
