wolf ammo
« on: March 09, 2010, 01:11:25 PM »
Just bought a case of wolf ammo.  Anyone got any reviews?  Good or bad?  I notice the box says 5.45X39, I just noticed this now.  This is for my AR15.

Wolf is good stuff.....for an AK :)

The 5.45x39 won't fit in your AR15, sorry to say. It will work in an AK-74 though.

If you do get wolf 5.56x45, try it out in your AR. Everybody's AR likes different ammo and more are picky about the steel cased stuff.

He may have given you the wrong case. The easiest thing would be to give him a call and work things out.
5.56x45 (.223) = AR15 ammo
5.45x39 = AK-74 ammo

Thanks man.  Called up the shop.  Just got back and exchanged it.  Well see if my AR likes the wolf ammo.

Wolf always gets mixed reviews.  I've shot thousands of rounds of Wolf 7.62 x 39 and also lots and lots of Wolf handgun rounds in 9mm and .45 auto.  My general approach to shooting is "buy the cheapest damn ammo you can find."

That being said, I like Wolf.  All of my guns eat it without complaint, at least in the mentioned calibers.  I like the funky smell it has when you're shooting.  And it performs with enough consistency that bad targets tend to be more my fault than the ammo's.

(One notable exception to the accuracy note is my Remington (ie IZMash) SPR-18.  At 50 yards it throws Wolf all over (and off) the paper like buckshot.)

There is, of course, a downside.  Wolf is dirty, dirty ammo.  100 rounds of Wolf dirty my guns at much as 500 rounds of "top shelf" ammo.  I do dread cleaning after  Wolf day, particularly with the gas-recoil SKS or with the 1911.

I've shot Wolf ammo here and there in 223 and 45.  As Tom mentioned, at 50yrds it was all over the place within a 5" group(223  in my case).  At handgun distances ofcourse the accuracy variances are less noticeable.  The other reason why Wolf ammo is so dirty is due to its steel case.  In a brass casing, after firing, it will fire form to the chamber, meaning expand to the size of the chamber it was fired out of, therefore minimizing any gas and powder discharge from going back into the chamber and action.  With steel casing, fire forming does not occur as much therefore allowing more crap back into the chamber area.  Hence more cleaning!

Some folks say that steel casing causes more wear on your chamber, thus being bad for your gun, but this I am assuming is over the course of thousands upon thousands of rounds.  Just food for thought.

I used wolf in my Saiga but wasn't able to actually shoot at paper yet. I'll do the same the next time I finally get back out to the range. Those trips are very rare :(

Hey!  Thanks for that!  I always wondered why my guns god so very much dirtier with steel-cased ammo, but never made this association.  I figured that they used crappy gunpowder that didn't burn cleanly or something, like shooting genuine black powder.  I'm happy to know that there's a reason not involving shoddy craftsmanship!

No problem Tom!  With some manufacturers it is a double edge sword, meaning the powder just burns a little dirtier, then add in the fact that steel casings allow more blowby you got yourself a dirty job when you get home.  LOL!  Dirty powder may not always be inferior product either... I reload my 45s with Bullseye and man I got one filthy 1911 after a trip to the range.  Like everything else in this world, all situational.  =)

In the AR I use Brown Bear steel case, and its not much dirtier than XM193. Rifle gets cleaned about every 1k. Wolf is softer ammo than standard service cartridges, more the reason to stick with BB. I ship in 5 cases+ of Brown Bear when I need it, which saves $40. per case over the best local prices of Wolf.
