New here!
« on: April 28, 2020, 04:59:31 AM »
Hello everyone of 2AH!

I recently received PCS orders to Oahu for my final tour. O0
I have been looking around to see if a PTR GIR in .308 is legal to bring to island.
I have browsed on HGL, the state law page itself, and things are vague. murky at best.
From my understanding, only 10 round mag restrictions are for pistols.

but I just seen this come across. bad news!

I guess they didnt hear that the CA background check and permit to purchase ammo was thrown out by 9th circuit recently. (HI falls under 9th)

Thanks in advance!

nice rifle.
its legal in HI.
the mag ban is in the process of being finalized.  maybe someone with better up to date knowledge on this can chime in.
and the registering part, that's a whole different story.

There was a few mag limit laws proposed for Hawaii, but since Corona, the 2020 legislative session was dismissed.  So no 10rd rifle mag law this year.

For bringing in a firearm, you have 5 (?) days to take it to the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) to register it.  Let them know you're from out of state and you have to bring the rifle.  They will have you fill out forms and pay to enroll in a program called RAPBACK.  This is like a nationwide FBI data base tracking.  It's supposed to be used if you commit a crime in another state, HPD will be aware of it.  Even though you have to sign the forms and pay, no one is enrolled in it as of today.  This law was passed in 2016.

Due to Corona, you also cannot just walk in like we used to be able to.  You must now make an appointment online via their website.  The earliest available appointment is in June.  So plan ahead.

Please be aware of our stupid laws like the "to and from".

Welcome. It is really refreshing that you did your homework so we don’t have to explain all over again. Enjoy your stay in Hawaii and hopefully there will be a public range worthy of .308 someday.

Thank you all!

I've been gone off of here for a hot minute.
This site needs a forum post notification lol.
Yeah, I think Hawaii extorting us for money for RAPBACK is lame. They already have access to NICS and FBI databases. I digress.
It is a nice rifle, but I will have to wait, it seems.
I greatly appreciate all of your replies, info, and links! Great resources for later use.
