I too was too young to sign up for the draft,
But I had a brush with the law and my very expensive lawyer,
knew the State attorney General.
6 years was my sentence. I volunteered USAF.
I was a minor so the records are all "sealed".
I never signed up for the draft.
I was 23 when I got out.
The draft had ended well before that and I never
bothered to sign up, although I think I was supposed to.
Was never a problem. I had a secret Clearance at
Hughes Aircraft, my first job out of the Military.
An appeal to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals was argued in March 2020. The action seeks to deem the current Selective Service system unconstitutional.
They tried that before, but were ruled against, because the argument was only men are required to register. At that time (1981), women were not allowed to serve in combat roles, so the draft did not apply to anyone but men.
Now that women are allowed to serve in pretty much all roles, the case was refiled, and a ruling could come down almost any day now.
In December 2019, a bill to repeal the Military Selective Service Act and abolish the Selective Service System, H.R. 5492, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.
So, if the law isn't rewritten to include women, or even if it is, there is support for abolishing the system completely.
If you don't register, you can be denied student loans, federal student grants, naturalization, and almost every other gov't program besides welfare (of course).
