BJ Baldwin in self defense shooting
« on: May 06, 2020, 09:17:42 PM »
Vegas

He was eating in his car with his gf. Guy approached and started to shoot at his gf(competitive shooter). She took cover and then he shot at BJ. BJ drew (has ccw) and put the bad guy down. Didnt engage 2nd perp because he was running away.

Left scene and went to his brothers home and called his atty. Atty called 911.

Bad guy dead at the scene. No charges, ruled SD.

BJ is a dune buggie racer and owns a racing company. So he has $. Many Post on his IG of him shooting. Even going walking the dog with rifle slung amd supressor. Training paid off. Doesn't matter if ur a millionaire or regular joe. Need to be ready.

Updates to this story:
DA: Fatal shooting in parking lot was ‘clear case of self-defense’
https://www.reviewjournal.com/crime/homicides/da-fatal-shooting-in-parking-lot-was-clear-case-of-self-defense-2020768/

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Monday that the fatal shooting of a man last month by the head of a Las Vegas motorsports company was “a clear case of self-defense.”

A Las Vegas police report indicates Smith was accompanied by his brother, Kevin Smith, 40. Kevin Smith told police his brother was upset that morning because of a failed attempt to buy firearms from a gun store in the complex.  Prior to the shooting, Kevin Smith said, his brother threw rocks at the gun store’s front window. The siblings left the shopping complex on Tropicana, then later returned on foot, police wrote in the report.

Police said Joseph Smith fired seven times at Baldwin, and Baldwin fired 11 times at Smith.

My thoughts:
1.  DA cleared BJ very quickly after just 1 week.  DA would never make a public statement like that in Hawaii and the investigation would go on for weeks, months, or years.
2.  BJ was detained on site, but not arrested and booked.
3.  Very unusual case.  Criminals won't shoot at people if they want to rob them.  He was out to kill someone.
4.  Keep situational awareness especially at 2am.
5.  An example of why you need  more than 10 rounds in a magazine.
6   Bad guy still got a gun.
7.  BJ fled the area and called for help, which is the safe thing to do.

It seems the gun shop had a valid reason to deny the purchase.  Wonder what they knew/suspected?

When shooting from outside into a curved, slanted windshield, the round will be diverted downward, so aim higher.

When shooting from inside through a curved, slanted windshield, the round will be diverted upward, so aim lower.

This assumes you aren't putting 2+ rounds through the same exact hole in the windshield.

Go on YouTube and search Shooting Through a Windshield.  Get plenty vids and some commentary.

He posted on his IG story.  Things he would change about his EDC.  He switched to 124gr Gold Dot and a threaded barrel to his G19, which adds an additional 40fps.  He stated that the bad guy was tough and didn't go down after being hit.  Bad guy was still shooting at BJ after he put rounds in him.  Keep in mind that BJ landed 10/10 into the bad guy. 9 in the chest and 1 in the head.

He didn't get the adrenaline spike that most people should get because of his background.  He is a dune buggy racer, has been in many accidents and even on fire a few times.  So to get his adrenaline going, takes more than being shot at and returning fire.

He is currently depressed after what happened.  I think its good for him to tell people the after effects of being in a self defense shooting.  There aren't too many vids of people talking like how he does, nor who have the training that he has.

His GF Tori is doing more vehicle type of self defense shooting with PFC Training in Vegas.  Her friend had vids of them shooting from inside a car, dismount, etc... on her IG.

Another thing he mentions is how important it is to carry daily.  A while ago, he was involved in a road rage incident and didn't have means of escaping nor was he armed. He left his gun at home.  He didn't get into much details, but since then, he carried everywhere he went.  And this time it protected him and his gf who wasn't carrying.  He also mentions that he is even more aware of his surroundings.   The issue with that is that he will eventually burn out from being in "yellow/orange" when ever he leaves the house.  Warrior Poet had a vid about that.  Even secret service agents cannot maintain being in yellow/orange all the time.

He posted the above statements while eating with Tori at In n Out again.

Few more updates:

SNIP

Definitely messed with the wrong guy.
Thanks for sharing Zips.  Yup, def messed with the wrong person.

He brought up a lot of excellent points.  The first one the caught my attention was that he initially was on his cell and took him a bit to assess what was going on.  Had the two hooded guys been closer, might have turned out differently.  Not criticizing him, just a note that I tend to see so many people with their heads buried in their cell phones these days.  Surprised I don't see more people walking into sign posts. . .

In his IG post, he mentioned he first noticed the 2 when they were about 80 yards away because Tori said "BJ, BJ, BJ" in a frightening tone.  Both were out of the car at this time.  As the 2 got close enough, he even acknowledged them by saying "what's happening".  That's when the bad guy pointed the gun at BJ.  Then he pointed the gun at Tori.  This is when BJ knew this was going to be his only opportunity to shoot and he won't get a 2nd one. He doesn't mention what distance this was at, nor does the stories by the local media.

Relating to the adrenaline, he also mentions that he's been doing BJJ for 15 years and got into lots of fist fights.  So really this bad guy picked the wrong dude to mess with.

Yeah, I read your post and watched the video.  He admitted that both of them had their focus on their cell phones when they first exited In-n-Out.  My point was if the 2 guys were say 20 yards away when he first noticed, his time to assess and react would have been different.
