Awesome list guys!  This got me to thinking of my list.  Mine would be as follows:

1) Mossberg 500 12ga ($300)
    - As the saying went, if there was only one gun, it would be a shotgun.

2) Glock 17 9mm ($500)
    - Sidearm. I am partial to the Springfield XD9 but chose this because of choice #3.

3) Keltec Sub 2000 9mm ($400)
    - Nice foldable carbine that shares magazines and ammo with the Glock.

4) Ruger 10/22 ($300)
    - Do it all rifle with a small bullet.

5) Ruger Gunsite Scout .308 Rifle ($1000)
    or Beretta Tikka T3 Scout CTR .308 Rifle ($1000)
    - Do it all rifle with a large bullet.

Since the total only adds up to $2500, I would get 2 of each item on my list.  Alternatively, I would get an accurate AK-47 7.62x39 or a reliable piston AR15 5.56 for $2500.

Ok, after a year, I've revised my list:

1. PTR-91 .308 ($1000 x 3 = $3000) or
    Yugo AK-47 Underfolder 7.62x39 ($700 x 4 = $2800)

2. Springfield XD-45 ($500 x 4 = $2000)

I'm a big fan of everyone using the same platform so we can share mags and ammo as needed.

I prefer the AK platform.

As long as everyone has a rifle that uses an AK mag, we're good.

I have enough sons to make a formidable little army.

HK45 tactical in OD green x2

I think those 4 comes out to about $5k in street price 

I would buy firearms that are everywhere in the world.  I like to get anything the military, police, or what most civilians have.  Also whatever caliber is the most popular.  The firearms that are popular are already proven and will be your friend when the SHTF due to the ease of finding spare parts, finding spare magazines, and finding ammo.  Also any NATO firearms or calibers can probably be found easily in non-NATO regions.

1. Glock 19 - Most popular among police forces and civilian alike.  9mm is everywhere.
2. AR15 - Military issues them, police forces use them, almost every gun owner has one.
3. Remington 870 - Most popular shotgun.  Mossberg 590 probably the 2nd most popular.
4. AK47 - This gun is literally everywhere... EVERYWHERE!
5. 1911 - It's been around for 100 years and probably only getting more popular.
6. Remington 700 - Popular among military and police.  .308 is probably the 3rd easiest rifle caliber to find... Behind .556 and 7.62x39.
7. M1A - If you suck at sniping like me and require many follow up shots... This is a semi auto .308 that is still used by the military... or at least used too.  Still popular among civilians.
8. Ruger .22 pistol or rifle. - Ruger .22s are proven and .22 ammo is extremely cheap and plentiful.  Perfect for hunting small game and can still be deadly to humans if it comes to it.
9. Smith and Wesson revolver - I'm not knowledgable on revolvers but Smith and Wesson revolvers have been used by almost all LE agencies back in the day.  Revolvers are very good pistols as they have very little moving parts, unlike like semi autos.  It's like comparing a carburated vehicle to fuel injected... for you car peeps.  Some just dislike revolvers but they have their advantages.  I would get a .357 revolver just because to can shoot both .357 and .38 calibers.  .38s are still pretty plentiful out there.

I wouldn't buy anything in a fancy caliber that you'll have a hard time finding or a firearm that isn't used by the military or police.  To me... If the military or police use it... you know it has been tested beyond its limits and is proven.  Or you could just buy a Les Baer and wait several paychecks to own your next gun.   

All that should be under $5k... I think
