Carcano M91/24 TS Rifle over at Buds
« on: July 23, 2020, 04:39:05 PM »
Just saw an email ad from Buds for the Carcano M91/24 TS Rifle for $249.

The TS stands for "Truppe Special" or Special Troop. These were purportedly used by the Italian Carabinieri and is chambered in 6.5 Carcano (6.5x52mm).

I love old stuff but getting one often means adding more reloading dies and supplies to my collection in order to shoot these things.

This rifle interests me but I know very little about it. Are these C & R rifles underpriced at $249 or that what its worth? Is ammo readily available and if so, how expensive is it?

I saw that PSA (of all places) had some for sale at the same price. I was considering buying one but I have the same reservations about buying dies, brass, boolits, etc. Not sure about the one at Buds, but the ones at PSA are in “Used Surplus” condition. Hence the $249 price. So expect a beater if it is in the same condition.

PPU and Norma still makes brass but of course you’ll pay dearly for it. Plenty of projectiles available since it is 6.5mm. Also, ammo is still made and is available over here but I don’t know if it is available over there.

I want one because they are not that common over here. And they are a bit unusual. I doubt they will appreciate much in value. I don’t buy C&R stuff for that reason and I shoot everything I own. I’m not sure how often I am going to shoot rifle out here since most of the ranges are south of me and the window to shoot rifles is short due to temperatures and fire restrictions.

They are interesting rifles and would be an different type addition to a collection if that is what you are looking for.

A relative left me a Carcano.
He had the same type that killed Kennedy.
I consider it a crime that Italy issued that POS to it's soldiers.
Though I have ammo for it, I consider it to be an expensive club,
It is useless as a gun.
6.5 mm is a pretty effective round if you can put one down range.
I still find it difficult to believe Oswald was so effective by himself
with that POS rifle.
Spend the money on a European SKS,
much better investment and they are covered by CC&R
license.

Groveler is right and I agree with all of the above reasons Not to buy this rifle.
The condition is listed at Buds as fair to good. If this is correct I would pass on this fact alone.

My dad told me a story about his experience with the carcano during WW2.
An Italian policeman let him shoot his carcano carbine. My dad was not impressed with it
but thanked the policeman and told him he had a good rifle. He then let the policeman shoot
his M1 Garand. The policeman was overwhelmed with the Garands performance and with
hand gestures and broken english he expressed to my dad that his Carcano was garbage.
I realize that comparing the M1 to the Carcano is an apples to oranges issue but this story
will still be with me until my brain stops functioning.

I broke down and bought one last week from Classic Firearms. They are advertising them as Good to Very Good for $269.99. The ones from PSA were in Used Surplus condition. This usually means they a shooter grade only. I am not so much into safe queen quality stuff, but Used Surplus condition I have been disappointed in when I have ordered stuff in that condition. Good to Very Good is where I like to be and $269 at Classic Firearms I thought was a good price at $20 over the Used Surplus condition from PSA. It is due to arrive this Wednesday. I’ll let you know what it is like when it arrives if you are still interested in this gun.

Just beware, I had a hell of a time finding dies for this rifle. I spent 2 days on Google until I found a place that had a set of new old stock of Hornady dies. RCBS only special orders these at $143 and Lee and Hornady still makes them but Lee only makes a run of them every so often and everyone is out of them and Hornady are all out as well. So not impossible to find but tough nonetheless at this time. I think they are probably all out due to the new shipment of Carcano rifles around lately. Also, the 6.5mm bullet is not a true .264 as most are. The Carcano bullet is around .268 in diameter making some ammo not very accurate and making finding the right bullet for reloading a little tougher.

I have the Lee set and have loaded ammo using the Hornady .268 torpedo shaped bullets (supposedly out of production) with good results.  The Carcano is hard to shoot - it has shitty sights, just like the Arisaka.

This guy has over 20 videos on the Carcano: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheKoba49

Can’t be any worse than my Mosin Nagant. That has one of the worst triggers I have ever tried and the sights are so small I can hardly see them.

Sights? What sights?!

The trigger on my MN is gotta be the sweetest trigger on any C&R rifle that I own. I tuned the spring per a Younube video and the trigger pull is smoother than buttah!

I saw Bud's Carcano ad again this weekend.  The fact that the reloading dies themselves can cost more than 50% of the cost of the rifle makes me think thrice about buying this expensive club.

I wrote Lee CS and asked them when they are going to do another run of Carcano dies. They basically said they didn’t know when or if they were ever going to do a run again. They even said they were cancelling back orders for the dies. If you can find some new old stock of dies like I did or a used set of dies, for a decent price you might consider this. But I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed when Lee doesn’t do another run of dies and they are stuck with a rifle they have to buy expensive ammo for and can’t shoot if they cannot reload for it.
