Some have said that they will restrict the rifle range to 100 yards, with No proof that rounds are clearing the mountain.  This will make Kokohead that much more of a unsatisfactory rifle range...

KHSC has been around for years. Incidences have been far and few. I dont believe all the ricochet stories over the years.  Especially when i witnessed a complaint.

Apparently one of the topics of discussion, maybe the main topic, at the Sunday meeting will be a report on the Range by Safety Specialist George Wakui.
Eight by ten color pictures with circles and arrows included. Nine pages total. Surely there are copies out there on the street.
I tried to attach it but it is too big. Will be glad to try again if there is a way to by pass the size limits.
It is good info. Shows what we are up against, although some of the ideas for improvements have merit.

I'm not liking reducing the rifle range to 100yards only.

There are several issues, IMHO, that need to be addressed in the meeting. As a side note, I saw the agenda and it did note that there was a time for "public opinion and discussion" meaning that they are probably trying to use this meeting to satisfy the requirements that changes have to be put before the public before they can be implemented. So, go, and make sure they know we're here....

First, the safety plans I saw not only limited the rifle range distance, but kept the pistol range distance at 25 and 50 yards. It implied that the NRA range standard was a minimum of 25 yeards. I do not believe this to be the case. I strongly believe that any pistol range should have the capability to shoot at closer ranges. Practicing self defense shooting at 25 yards is completely illogical. I do not believe that NRA has such a restriction and that point needs to be made clear so we can insert into the plans shooting at closer distances.

Second, why is the number of action bays being reduced to only one? With the ever growing popularity of shooting sports that utilize these ranges, they should be increasing them not decreasing them.

And, finally, why is HPD (and other law enforcement agencies) allowed to use the range to the exclusion of the public? In light of the fact that KHSC is the ONLY public range, and that HPD has a multimillion-dollar shooting facility, why are they using OUR range? And, to add insult to injury, they sometimes book the range and then never use it.

Of course the range should be open longer and more days as well.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I am with you Heavies.
I have a number of older battle rifles that just don't like 100 yds/meters
The Mauser shoots near foot high at 100, sights all the way down but dead nuts at 200.
The 30-40 and Garand like longer range too.
It would be a shame to limit to 100 yards. My vote would be to expand the long range side rather than reduce

I wonder if maybe we should have supported Life of The Land  and all those anti development guys (Hippies) back in the '60's and '70"s
when they were fighting the developments out at Kalama valley and Hawaii Kai in general.
With the benefit of hind sight maybe they were on to something. The range would still be in the boondocks.

Thanks gordyf.

Think its bull that they would consider making decisions about safety concerns that have arisen due to neglect.  So the city fails to properly maintain a facility then deems it less safe.  No blue sky roof ... well how's about fixing the missing section of roof and we call it a compromise?  Nobody wants to pay for range maintenance but they could beautify Nimitz for apec.  Piss me off, the city would consider adding further restrictions to a facility when clearly public use has increased.  Somehow the city will find moneyto build berms, bbackstops, and roofs but can't even put in a decent road to the ipsc range.  Users are climbing the curb to park by the bathrooms since there's not enough parking.  And how many bathroom stalls?  Come on.  One pisser and one shitter.  Won't even get started on the gate issue.

Kinda last minute but does anyone know the average number of people that use the facility on the weekends?  That may help put things in perspective for the parks and city council guys.

Maybe he is referring to the Plot Plan, which only references one action bay?

Also, The grape vine has had a lot of rumor and talk about what may go down.  I have heard that at the time they want to implement the locked gate policy, parking will be disallowed on the grass areas.  Where are people supposed to park?  If this is the case, paved areas for parking need to be expanded greatly.

I don't see the no parking on the grass thing going. Us parking there, is like one of the only thing that keeps the grass down haha.   Also, where would we park in the action bays?   They can't handle that stuff.   One thing that was mentioned, is have the center grass(east of the bathroom) removed and just put rock over it.

It may be time for us to consider voting for Ben as Mayor, his Democrat background  being what it is. He certainly isn't making points with the established special interest groups.
I thought The present guy was going to be as good a Mayor as he was a prosecutor. Shame on me.
Ben is/was reasonably pro gun at his last election as GOV and a gun owner. Maybe he will see our point on the range as a well used City Park. Ne'r mind what I think of the Rail.
I think I may have voted for him one time before because of that.
I am certainly voting for him this time.
WHICH BRINGS UP A POINT!!!
All of you out there ARE registerd to vote and will vote in the next election.?
It not only advances our agenda, but it is YOUR CIVIC DUTY!
I heard that as many as 30% of conservative activists are not even registered, much less vote. We need all the votes we can get. Registration is EASY!
The other side even registers dead people and pets.
My wife told me in no uncertain terms that if you do not participate you lose ALL your grumbling rights.
SO, if you don't vote NO GRUMBLE!! She is right. There were no political discussions  at home until I complied.

I wll now step down from the soap box, but I am serious.
