And now she will go home to friends and family she never knew she had. All with smiles with their hands out.
I wouldn't agree to any news coverage and would insist on anonymity. Not even for the casino's monthly winners magazine.
But then I wouldn't know if there is a choice. Maybe you have to.
I've always planned on a similar path if (when) I hit the MegaBucks.
Don't sign any news releases that include name and/or photos.
Hire a lawyer and/or accountant to see how best to receive the winnings .... i.e. set up a corporate account, create a trust, know what method pays the least taxes, deposit the max into a retirement fund, etc, etc.
As mentioned, relatives will crawl out of the woodwork looking for their "fair share". You'll also be a target for investment brokers, estate managers, strangers looking for charity ("my mother needs an operation"), and acquaintances filing lawsuits for anything they think you'd rather settle than go to court over (i.e. "Does your current wife/girl friend know about us?").
And, if anyone on your trip happened to pay for part of your vacation (shared a comped room, meals, rental car, etc.), they'll be looking to get their share, too.
Money, or the opportunity to get some, changes people.
