Not unexpected, but still somber news.

Can't say I'm sad, though.  Makes this November's election even more important.

Trump should make the nomination before the election choosing someone the Left would have no problem with.

That would diffuse the Democrats, because if they oppose his pick, it eliminates the possibility that the Dems will also support that nominee if Trump loses.

Trump:  "I nominate this LIBERAL to the Supreme Court." (Liberal, but not Extreme Left)

Democrats:  "Orange Man BAD!  We'll never accept that nominee!"

Biden:  "I won, and I will support Former President Trump's Supreme Court Liberal nominee."

Democrats:  "Yay!!"

Is there enough time for trump to pick another justice?

Only if the Senate can push the confirmation vote through.

Trump could name his nominee today if he wanted.  It's up to McConnell to call for a confirmation hearing.

Maybe now, with the lockdowns and other pandemic crap going on, the Dems will be too distracted to put up as much of a fight as they did against Kavanaugh.

HolyShite! This is the battle lines drawn.
The election of which President will rest on this as much as anything with anyone who knows anything.

Debates should be entertaining.

Congress will clusterfuck as usual, only this time on purpose.

Still sad news overall. That said, think things are crazy now? Hold on to your butts.
Well said.

She was an incredible lady with a historic and outstanding career. I did not agree with all her decisions but she always presented her case with decorum. The unhinged left could learn a lot from her example, but they are too busy playing winner take all.
Stop blaming lazy people. We didn’t do anything.

Word is nominee will be announced within a few days and McConnell says Trump's nominee will get a vote from the full Senate. So there!

Top prediction at this point for Trump's pick:

Amy Coney Barrett
United States Circuit Judge of the
United States Court of Appeals for the
Seventh Circuit

Trump’s Supreme Court list: President reveals
names of 20 more people he’d consider nominating

Quote
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement, “President Trump’s list of potential
Supreme Court nominees demonstrates his commitment to appointing originalists, who will abide by the
Constitution, and textualists, who will implement the plain meaning of statutes. They will uphold the rule
of law and ensure that America continues to shine as a beacon of freedom and justice around the world.”

To be honest I think it’d be cool if trump waited until after the election. Just to get people motivated to go out and vote for him.

Kind of like if you believe your gonna win then “put your justice nominee where your mouth is”

Edit: might also go over really well with independents and undecided voters.

The court begins hearing cases in two weeks. Why do you want to have a 4/4 split until next March (the session ends in June)? That time frame likely would mean that the new justice would be excluded from virtually all the cases for the whole court calendar year, and wouldn't likely be actually involved in litigation until the October 2021 session begins. No way. DO IT NOW!

Any they would have no problem with would be the end of the 2A, of course.

That's one strategy.

Even if Trump makes his pick now, the Senate still has to confirm.  Look at how long the Dems drug out the Kavanaugh hearings, trying to delay it until after the midterms.  Had the Dems won the Senate, they could have blocked Kavanaugh's confirmation.  That cluster was the worst circus in the history of Congress.

If that crap happens again, Trump can use the circus/hearings to fire up his voting base.   He won't have to delay his nomination until after the election, because the Dems will try to do that for him.

I'm not sure what the rules are, but once a nomination is before the Senate, I would think the Senate has to vote for confirmation at some point.  Could a President Biden ( :shake:) withdraw a SC nomination once it's presented to the Senate for confirmation?  Would be interesting to see him try.

I think Trump should go ahead with the nomination.  If confirmation happens, that's a very good thing whether Trump wins reelection or not.  Plus, I don't believe Biden is going to win.  Even if he survives the debates, I think any enthusiasm for him will fade once his lack of faculties is demonstrated for all to see.

If Trump wins, there's the probability the Dems/Leftist groups will contest the election results again, riot and drag the final electoral vote out as long as possible, which could delay the SC nomination.

Better to get this SC pick in the "win" column as soon as possible, while the Dems are more focused on stealing the election.

I heard Adam Schiff has another whistleblower report and is opening another investigation into Trump.  That man has no credibility, but it isn't stopping him.  I guess he figures his image can't get any worse!     That could easily be the Dem's "October Surprise" for 2020.

All that on top of what punaperson said re: a missing jurist on the court for that long.

The sooner, the better.
