Another Panic Buying Episode?
« on: October 20, 2020, 07:13:10 AM »
I have a friend that works for Fry’s (Kroeger’s) out here. She was telling me that there may be another TP/Paper Towel/Wipes/Hand Sanitizer etc. etc. shortage coming. When I asked her why she said China is either slowing or stopping some shipments to the US. She didn’t know why and she didn’t know exactly when. It was just something her bosses are telling her to expect. Last week while at Costco I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. This week at Costco I noticed more people buying TP, Paper Towels and wipes all in their baskets. Coincidence? Could be. I don’t know. I am just saying it wouldn’t hurt if you bought an extra package just in case.

Because I got caught without TP/Paper Towels/wipes etc. due to my moving I have officially stocked up because it will never happen to me again. Same with reloading supplies. I couldn’t help my circumstances earlier this year. But now I have the space and the storage capacity to stock up and be able to not worry again.

I can see the panic in the gun buying,  trying to buy a bunch and everything is hard to get or sold out.  I guess I am part of the panic at this point.

You're retired and I A$$ume stable or at least "not bad" financially.  You don't need a reason to justify buying more guns, stocking up on reloading supplies, or even TP.   ;D

Wash in shower, buy moar guns.

A few years ago, Taiwan had a slight shortage.  Something about China.  I cant recall the specific reason, I think had something to do with the lack of trees.

Panic buying of sanitizer I can understand some as businesses start opening up and demand goes way up.  That said, if consumers are buying that stuff up, it's fear of being caught short.  I am still working on my big bottle of Purell that I bought for keeping at my desk before all this stuff started.

Just think lots of unknowns and fear.  Is it warranted?  Who knows.  I'm concerned about many things, but in a way, what comes, comes.  I think I've done my best to prepare myself (including family and close friends) and also even ability to help others.

I can see folks still buying up ammo.  Seems like stock is still low.  Seemingly coming back some, but still folks buying up 5.56/.223 and 9 mm for redonkulous prices.  Dayum. . .  :(

China was able to almost singlehandedly cause a shortage in steel almost worldwide at one point.

Cabella's in Portland, OR shelf empty of most ammo. Had lots of 22 ammo still.  As of this past Sunday.

You should've bought more ammo.  Or have your "friend" buy.   ;D

I would think .22 ammo availability would be nil or sparse.

First chance I get I'll pick up .22 and 5.56/.223 although I've resigned myself to paying higher prices.

Edited to add:  Also TP, paper towels and sanitizer.  Last time I got caught with my pants down.  If only people wouldn't hoard so much but I don't blame them.

I think no matter who wins the prez there is gonna be another surge of firearms purchases with crazy prices. Ammo too.

As for tp, for some reason my family has been midweek hoarders for years lol. Just gotta keep working it to make it soft ,plantation style. 5 gallon bucket and small trash bags will make due in a pinch

I’m surprised to see 22 ammo on the shelves. I read somewhere that the ammo manufacturers have quietly stated that they do not intend to increase ammo production by buying new machines like they did the last time. Which hurts the 22 ammo supplies because 22 ammo is built on specific duty machines that cannot be used for centerfire ammunition production. And vice versa. Since 22 is the most popular caliber in the US I imagine that 22 is going to be in short supply for a lot longer than 9mm and 223/556. Same thing happened in the last shortage.

With all this said, what I have seen recently is that way over priced 22 ammo is not flying off the shelves any more. There is an LGS here in Prescott that has CCI Mini Mags for sale at $10/100. Which is not all that overpriced and they have had this ammo in their display case for at least a month that I know of. Also, I saw cheap steel cased 9mm ammo advertised at 32 cents a round. It was just 65 cents not that long ago. My favorite 22 ammo is back in stock at some online stores and has been for sale for almost 3 weeks. It is advertised as high as $20/100. So I think things MIGHT be coming back to normal. Tho it is still too soon to say for sure.

I just moved back to the mainland in April. I had a problem getting TP when I arrived. Fortunately, I sat on Amazon for over a week before I moved trying to buy some and had it delivered to my new house before I arrived. It sat on my front porch for a few days before I arrived. I’m glad no one stole it off my porch. It still took me many weeks before I found some locally. Then 6 weeks later my container arrived and I had more than I needed until it came back into stock locally. Being a senior I took full advantage of Costco opening early for us seniors before the hoards came in and bought up every package. I have stocked up and I am prepared to weather the next storm if it comes again.

But with all that, I still bought one more package based on what my friend told me. I guess I am now a hoarder.
