Thoughts on USCCA insurance?
« on: November 03, 2020, 08:59:34 AM »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here is a USCCA member?  I know with the lack of CCW here many don’t think it’s needed. I was planning to join just as a way to have some coverage if ever I need to defend my family.  For the price I feel like it is a decent deal.

Anyone have it and care to share your thoughts?

Thanks

Also curious.

Of course if you are a Honolulu resident, Ballard has promised to ruin your life if you dare defend yourself.

We have it.  There is a chart out there if you google that shows the top carriers and comparisons.  I like how they pay for defense cost up from vs. a reimbursement type which the NRA one does.  Which means if you're in court, you pay all the attorney fees yourself and then get your money back.

But the NRA one is good that it has a free spousal endorsement at no charge.  This was in 2018 when we had the NRA Carry Guard, so IDK if it's still available. But the NRA one did have to switch carrier s a few times since 2016 and is not allowed in WA due to their insurance commissioners decision.

For self defense insurance, it's not only for CCW or OC type carrying . It could be if you're inside your home and need to defend yourself as well.  My CCW instructor in NV had a student use deadly force legally, but was sued by the guy he shot.  He had to spend $40,000 for attorney fees and ended up winning as well.  He never got that $40,000 back because he had no insurance and the suing party doesn't have the money.  Anyone can sue you for any reason, but winning is another story.

300 dollars a year for gold.  Hmmm.  Like any insurance it sounds great if you need it and a waste if you dont T_T  I am tempted to get it myself but trying to calculate odds.

Thanks,

Yes, that's my thought.  I was planning to get it for coverage mainly in SD situations inside my house.  I don't have my CCW but thought for the $, it is worth the cost.  Like all other insurance, it's only useful if it is used.  I get that, but I'd hate to need it and not have it.

That is not a good way of thinking if you need it or not.  Just take that money you were going to buy a CZ custom and get self defense insurance. But totally your call.

Since it's not required by law (yet), you're buying peace of mind.  HI law makers did try in 2018 to make having insurance mandatory for all gun owners.  But thanks to HIFICO, the bill died.  You should also join them if not already because 2020 session is coming up soon.

TBH, I'd rather pay for it and not have to use it.  No one wants to be involved in a lawsuit.  There are other benefits of having the USCCA one well. Go to their website and read up on it.

Yes, I have been on their site and contemplating it for some time.  Won't say that I have unlimited funds but do feel this is something that is worthwhile.  Of course, I hope I never have to use their services, but am just planning ahead just in case.  I will be purchasing a plan, just trying to decide which carrier to go with.

I was just wondering how peoples' experience has been with USCCA.

Even if you don't join, you can follow them on social media and they will let you know when bills are coming up for hearing and testimony.  And of course on here too.  We can expect the rifle magazine ban to come around again.  Writing testimony is free.  Showing up to hearings if allowed to is better.  But we all understand work comes first.  And with Covid, they won't allow in person testimony either.

Separate topic, but there are companies that will offer a replacement in the event the firearm is used in a defensive situation and handgun is being held for evidence.

USCCA covers "incidental costs" up to the maximum coverage for incidentals, including cleaning and restoring your residence ( :shake:), the firearm's value up to MSRP if confiscated, and miscellaneous costs as a direct result of a “claim”, “law enforcement inquiry”, or other legal proceeding to which this insurance applies.

I had NRA Carry Guard, but for less money, you get much more from USCCA.

Oh, USCCA also covers you for a stolen firearm, even if you get sued or arrested because it was used in a crime afterward.

USCCA has a 2 million limit and 250K for defense cost.  Last I checked, the NRA had different coverage tiers.

So they pay you to replace and you get your gun back.  What happens to it?

If the gun is being held as evidence for a court case, it's basically confiscated.  You'll get to buy a replacement through the insurance policy benefits.

Unless you transfer the gun you used to the insurance carrier, it will remain yours.  I doubt any insurer wants to deal with a bunch of firearms that were used in a shooting -- any shooting.  Better to pay out from the policy and forget about it.

What happens to your gun in evidence doesn't matter once you're acquitted.  You can pick it up, or after it's considered abandoned, it'll be destroyed.  Although, it could also find its way into the safe of a department employee. Things have been known to disappear from evidence storage quite often.

Personally, I'd claim it when possible and mount it in a nice display case -- "The Gun that Saved My Life".   :geekdanc:

I have had USCCA Platinum for about 3 years.  To me, they offer the best coverage and will cover you for any self defense weapon you use, as long as it is not one prohibited by law.  You get attacked and stab someone with a knife or punch someone or pick up a rock and hit someone, you are protected by their insurance.  Just make sure the knife you use is not a balisong, switchblade, dagger or one that is prohibited by law for you to carry.  In addition, they got a great semi-monthly magazine that comes with your membership in addition to online classes.  With tax, it costs $31.20 per month.

No. . .

The company will give you a replacement firearm in the event that you use that firearm in a SD situation and go through the process (what FJ mentioned).

And I thought you already knew everythang. . .  ???
