Be safe and alert
Hi there, I've joined the HDF early this year and I've been meaning to got out to one these range days. I've never been to one before and I'm wondering what to expect and bring and is expected of me.

Thanks in advance to any answers to my post.
good day all so here is the up coming plans for range day on sat oct 26th. Starting off with the sign in, waivers and fees. everyone must sign in and sign waivers prior to shooting. Everyone! At this time will pay "match fees" collected pior to shooting. Fee schedule as follows HDF current members "match fee" is $10.00.  As For non-members its $20.00 without joininig the HDF, Or they will be encouraged to join the HDF at this time @ $25.00 for membership and then it would be $10.00 for the day total $35.00 so take advantage of this now.
also forgot the free shoot portion of the day fee is $10.00 for anyone coming out just for that portion which is still a "match fee" because the team building portion is the "match" which is at the end of the day.

As for the finally of the day i like to call it team building " The Match" I have a halloween theme challenge for us so spread the word and lets do this and make the HDF the group to belong too!

all fees collected will pay for the extra equipment now needed due to no access to the container previously used by hdf and to pay for other expenses like insurance costs and of course the main objective 2A rights!

Training time should start aaround 8:30- 9am due to sign in and registration.

Next is the training segment which will be Carbine (  rifle sling, 250 rounds, extra mags, knee pads, belt) with some Pistol transitions( 200 rounds, extra mags, holster). I built some barracaids for this weekend so there will be run and shoots some behind barracaid shooting, carbine to pistol transitions some come prepared to work. As for the finally

of the day i like to call it team building i have a halloween theme challenge for us so spread the word and lets do this and make the HDF the group to belong too!

refence page 16 at the bottom. As for expectations to fully participate in the drills safely handling your carbine from sling postion and drawing from a holster and muzzle discipline is imperative. So with that said we all need to start somewhere if not with the advanced group then that's what the afternoon sessions are for to come and get some basic instruction.

They are quite slow to put out the schedules.  I haven't seen anything from the range master at KKHSC yet.  Will update as soon as we get that information.  :shaka:

Eberybody ok today? :)  Me a little bit sore and toasty haha!

So a quick thought:  If we're going to incorporate sprints, calisthenics and the like, a warmup and stretch first is a good idea.   I know we're all our own first defenders and will go stone cold no matter our age, physical abilities, etc. but give us a chance for practice and injury avoidance.

It's going to look like police or military training to the outsiders either way no matter what we do or wear.  I bring the latter up because of a conversation in passing which seemed to indicate a dress code might be a good idea?  FWIW I like surplus, camo, cargos, vests, plate carriers, helmets, neon clothing too :) and not in favor of any dress code just to be P.C.  If you brought it then run it.

Speaking of LEO and targets, look at the ones they're training with now:

http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/high-tide-and-turn/2013/feb/28/dhs-training-practice-targets-featuring-children-p/

Makes ours, which clearly have "good guy/bad guy" or generic shapes,  look tame in comparison.  Does HPD train with those now too?

Anyways, thanks again to everyone for range day.  Awesome clothesline setup and much better than constantly fiddling with frames, shims and tires!  Plus dirtychickens brought out those barricades!  Very cool.  I can see the beginnings of stage construction happening.  HDF Town some day?  :D  Looking forward to the next one!

Afternoon session:   I think a formal class needs to be created/announced for newbies to get them to participate.  Specifics developed so they know what to bring, how to prepare, what to do arriving at the range, what they will be doing in class, etc.   No one does it better than Front Sight IMO and we'd be doing good to emulate some of their practices.

I for one am sorely lacking in support hand practice so this last one was good one :)  Just practicing the transition is plenty when you add in clicking to safe in between reps so not only got octopus arms going but fingers too LOL!   Totally a 101 thing to practice next open session.  Just blasting away is always fun too.

More thoughts from the club?

I think that this past range session was great and it's alway fun seeing familiar faces and meeting new people.  I would like to thank the instructors and dirtylickins for their time and part they played to make it a successful range day.  This seemed pretty well thought out as far as the drills that were run and the target set-up by dirtylickins (the rope almost made it the whole time!).  IMO, HDF range days is a rare opportunity to run your gear like it should be and getting that feedback I found out I want to use shoes/boots that give more ankle support, and thanks to Jonjon run a smaller/lighter dump pouch.

The idea of a light  warm up prior to beginning would be cool, but I would recommend we come to the range earlier to do that/set up and get registration/paper work done to not interfere with shooting time.  I'm not in great shape, but I for one would like to see more of a workout incorporated into a small part of the  session (burpees/push-ups/short sprints) as I think it would be good to have your heart rate going as you go through the drills (not too many places that you can do that).  As far as a formal class for newer shooters, I'm sure that would be beneficial and would most likely increase membership to HDF.  One issue I would see is who would do it?  The instructors from the morning session?  That's a lot of work, and I'm sure they would also like to send some lead down range too after completing the morning training.  Are there more instructors than the ones that showed up this past weekend?

Good feed back fellas... so to address the newbie situation we had a discussion about already and is formally conducting a 101structure for that. so newbies come on out for the afternoon sessions so you can get on board and start attending the morning session. We are working on growing the attendees and support because these range days are a rare opportunity here on the island for us. Thanks guys for all your support.

mahalo for the input, 78
stretching /warmup would be a good idea
i think we're a run-what-ya-brung kinda group
everyone has different needs, budgets, available gadgets, and i think it's important for everyone to feel they can join in no matter what they have
as long as it is safe and legal, of course

like dlicks said, we have already begun discussing a 101 type class
our time is limited, but we will always be trying to improve class flow and instruction level as we go along
class prep materials will likely evolve too
as always, more input is always welcomed

was great to see you again, ku
mahalo for the feedback
we are learning as we go, so sign up should run smoother as time goes on
and it always helps for people to arrive early so that we can be set up and ready to go as soon as khsc goes hot
as far as instructors go, not sure if there are any more certified range masters/trainers out there
the range assistants like myself are pretty much there for observation/safety and to back up kanoa/henry/sterling
i can assure you the range day leadership will work hard to come up with a viable plan to include as many people as we can at every skill level

IMO, HDF range days is a rare opportunity to run your gear like it should be and getting that feedback I found out I want to use shoes/boots that give more ankle support, and thanks to Jonjon run a smaller/lighter dump pouch.

one other thing, everyone
yesterday was an extremely hot and muggy day
and a lot of people  were looking a little dehydrated
i was there only from 1pm, and drank 2 gatorades and a diet pepsi before 4 and i was still feelin it all evening
our high school cross country coach would always tell us, you are dehydrated until your pee is clear
and i wasn't peeing much all night

we all need to be better prepared and watch out for each other
