New gun owner mag capacity question
« on: December 01, 2020, 01:01:53 PM »
I’m looking to purchase my first handgun, and had a question about Hawaii’s laws on mag capacity. I’m looking for a Glock 17, is it possible to buy one when the mag capacity is 17+1? What are my options ?

If you're not exempt from the law (law enforcement), you can't possess or buy pistol magazines with larger than 10 round capacity.  If the gun arrives at an FFL as part of an out of state transfer, the FFL can't legally deliver the >10rd mags.  They will need to be blocked at your expense for you  to get them.  Depending on the brand, it might be just as expensive as buying factory 10rd mags to replace them vs. blocking.

If you go to another state and buy a >10rd mag (legal where you bought it), disassembling it before returning home makes it legal here.  A "mag parts kit" when disassembled holds zero rounds.

Hope that helps.
