Ultrasonic gun cleaning
« on: December 08, 2020, 11:06:05 AM »
Anyone did this before?  Anyone know of any shop or service for those interested?   I want to clean my guns with it once in a while but to invest the huge upfront cost and storage is a bit problematic.

I have a smaller one I use mostly for cleaning brass.  works well to get into small places, but to get it real shiny its better to use a tumbler or the vibrating one with media
I also use it to clean handgun slides or the bcg from my AR, or handgun barrels.  it does work to loosen up grime very well, but still need to wipe down after.  the US cleaner alone doesn't to the complete job but makes the wipe down a lot easier.

Chemicals kill the environment and contribute to climate change. For the sake of the children why do it?

Interesting I was hoping it was more of a replacement for deep cleaning.   The thing i hate the worst about this hobby is going home tired after a day of shooting to clean everything.

I haven't looked into ultrasonic cleaners in a while, but I have a couple of friends that do.  They are on the mainland, so can't try out.

Anyways, a big part of cleaning IMO is the opportunity to monitor the wear on parts and evaluate if they need to be maintained or replaced.  Wear patterns can tell you quite a bit about mechanical devices.

Personally, I want to clean my guns if I won't shoot them for a while.  But I'll also admit that there are times when I have an idea to shoot, X, Y, Z, etc guns on a given range day and only end up shooting a couple because I'd have to clean them.  I mean I could just not clean them, but personal preference.

1- you don't have to clean after every range visit, most of my friends don't even clean once every couple of years
2- yes, it is a replacement for deep cleaning, but it is still lots of work, you have to rinse multiple times, use compressed air and break free to drive out all the water, and then lube. but gun is pretty much brand new clean at that point....

Sums up NG drill/war games.  No one wants to shoot cause they gotta clean it after.  Especially when using blanks.

You mean I can't just drop the entire gun in there and let air dry after?

Omni, ify you are trying to be more green, make sure to use a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, vegan, fair trade value, non-GMO solution.

What is the cost you're looking at?  Amazon has sonic cleaners for less than $100.  IDK if you can use these or not though.  Also they don't look like they take up much space, looks like the size of a toaster.

Depends on its usefulness.  I was trying to find one that can fit the upper of an AR.

Yeah I don't clean every single time, but I feel bad when I don't clean.  Never clean my glocks cause...glock but I am starting to buy nicer things and don't think I can keep that train of thought.

Dang, ok.  This might be out of the realm of practicality.  I just thought i a drop, dry, drop (lube) and dry kind of thing.

i like my 2.5L one
its not huge, but big enough to clean brass and smaller firearms parts
i like it mostly for brass
i had a squib load 1 time bc i used the vibrating brass cleaner with crushed walnut and there was some media stuck in the bottom of the brass.  i guess i missed checking that one. so the hammer struck the primer but did not quite ignite the powder, so a 357 head was stuck in my barrel.  good that i recognized it right away and did not pull the trigger again.  took it home for examination.
that lead me to buy the US cleaner bc no media to get stuck in the brass
i still use the vibrating cleaner once in a while, but i am sure to inspect each brass with a flashlight now to make sure i don't get another squib load

Invest in real good dedicated cleaners like mpro7. That shit is pretty awesome. Better cleaner than clp. I usually spray it all down, take a smoke break etc. Then get at it. I clean after every range trip.

If it has to be done, just do it. Thats what my old boss use to tell me, kinda stuck with me and in the end you knoe you did a good hard days work.

Sometimes i use kroil but you have to clean it directly afterwards or your finish may be gone.

for some of us it is a sport - not a hobby. put on your man pants, get your hands dirty and clean your guns.
Some of us might think of it as a calling and a commitment.

My mind was shaped at 17-18 to clean and keep your weapon prepared for future use.  That meant cleaning after any extended use, conditions permitting.
