Firearms Evaluation
« on: December 17, 2020, 08:46:44 PM »
I am a Kaiser member and Kaiser will not sign off on a Psychological Clearance for the permit.  Is there any other source to obtain a clearance?
My permit is ready to pick up and they told me about this today.  So time is running out.  HELP!  Mahalo

I'm no lawyer, but I believe you need to find another doctor to perform an evaluation and clear you for firearms ownership. This of course depends on the specific reason you were flagged. Some people have reported being flagged and denied due to a visit to behavioral medicine for a non disqualifying reason/condition, in which case a clerical error was made and is much easier to resolve(call Kaiser). If you were flagged for something a bit more serious like a mental disorder or depression/anger counseling you will need to seek the proper official to evaluate and deem you fit to own a firearm....Lucky we live Hawaii  :shaka:

I never had anger issues until I tried buying guns in Hawaii.

Also make sure you got the template from hpd.

It needs to be very specific when you find another doctor to say your gtg.

I had the same issue keep calling the Firearms division and when you get through explain to them your Dr will not sign off on the evaluation.  I did that and they transferred to an officer in the Firearms division I spoke with an officer Wong he said to just come in when I get the chance and ask for him so I could fill out an out of state doctor's form instead. This was in August tho hope that helps.   Also ditched my Dr since they were infringing on my 2a rights LOL.

Will I run into a problem if I don’t have a primary care physician specifically listed with my health care provider?

If you're not talking about getting a clearance letter, the normal background check process just needs the name of your HMO.

Providers like Kaiser simply have a records employee pull your info and send it.  Only if there are entries regarding mental health services would there be a denial.

Not sure if others take a more hands-on approach by actual doctors before sending a response to HPD.  It would be nice if they all had the same standards, like:

Respond only if there is reason to suspect the patient has behavioral issues that preclude firearm possession.

Otherwise, do not respond.

HPD has to treat a non-response as "no reason to deny."

For the first 15 years I owned guns here I didn't have a PCP,  so I put "none" on the form.  HPD never  hassled me about it.

As others have said, just put "None" for the physician. I've applied for, & picked up a couple firearms in the last two months without a pcp. Good to go!
