Pistol Registration Question
« on: December 29, 2020, 09:13:37 PM »
Aloha everyone. I have two pistols up in Washington state that I purchased while living there. Both from a relative but no bill of sale or anything tying me to them. I’ve been living in Oahu for three years now and I’d like to bring them over and register them here but I’m not sure exactly how that would work.  Can anyone school me?

I have my appointment booked for my permit to acquire and have my safety course affidavit so I’m pretty sure that portion of the paperwork is in order.

If you are bringing in firearms you own from out of state, you don't need a permit to acquire appointment, you need an out of state registration appointment. The HPD's "Firearms" page, click on "Registration" and see "Out of State Registration".
You don't need a permit to acquire if you already own the out of state firearms. You can do everything in one trip (instead of three) if all is in proper order.
If you have the guns brought in through an FFL, then it would require a permit to acquire.

Roger that. I have been wondering if they are going to require a proof of sale or anything for them.

When you say nothing tying them (pistols) to you, what does that exactly mean?

Are they registered to you in washington state? Like, you have permits to own them in washington state?

Common sense.
Think about it very carefully.

I don't think WA has registration.

Private sale (in-law) with no bill of sale.  Worst case is if I have to when I’m up there I get a bill of sale then bring them back with me.

You only need a bill of sale for a TRANSFER (i.e. applying for a Permit to Acquire).  If the firearm is in your possession, and it's not listed with the Feds as stolen, you can register -- no problem.

No different than a visitor bringing a gun for hunting for a week.  They register their guns on arrival -- no proof of ownership required.

People who steal guns don't register them.  So, HPD is fairly certain you're not registering guns in your name that you don't legally own.  That would be like a car thief trying to register a stolen car in his name.  You'd be asking for trouble.

Bottom line:  If you want to get a bill of sale for your records and for the previous owner's benefit (documenting where the gun was transferred), that's your choice.  Since you already own the gun, no paperwork other than the HPD registration application is needed.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Hawaii is the only state that requires registration of all firearms, which includes multiple trips to HPD to show it to them as well.
