Would they have to point it in a safe direction, make sure it's not lighted, and keep their finger off the lighter.

I'm all for common sense caliber and powder weight limits for aerials.  Fully automatic high capacity cake fireworks and artillery shells are not the tradition that the ancestors intended.

I'm pretty much a fireworks Anarchist.  Back in WA state we'd go to the Indian reservations and buy the "Good" stuff.  We knew people where we could professional levels of Aerials.
I think the laws we have now are BS,  if for no other reason than most all of the laws are ignored.
Having said that,  most responsible adults are careful not to harm their neighbors,  not the imaginary harms of noise and smoke, but fire and property damage,
real harms.
Laws really don't prevent idiots from doing stupid.  Laws just give you a way to deal with them after the damage is done.

I refrain from using fireworks these days, I don't want to be chasing cattle, mules, donkeys, horses, goats, and sheep down in the dark.
We do have some people Mauka and a ways away that do some really
good Aerials, but are far enough away, that it is not a problem for us.
I live in a rural area and my neighbors all have animals.  We cooperate and keep it quiet.
I don't need a stupid law to tell me that.

Fireworks laws could be relaxed and still keep the community safe. Noise laws prevent obnoxious sounds at night while there could be open windows for loud fireworks on July 4th and New Years or year round in rural areas.
No reason to limit firecrackers, fountains, and sparklers.  There could be some limits on aerials in densely populated areas, especially on large mortars for safety reasons.  There weren't many fires or accidents considering the widespread use of aerials on New Years.  At the very least zones could be setup for aerials like Aloha Stadium and other places with no fire hazard.

I wonder how many of the people using fireworks are also Climate Change zealots.  The pollution created by the sparklers and firecrackers alone can make it hard for people with respiratory problems to breathe.  Imagine the damage those fireworks are doing to the climate all over the world.  Maybe not on their own, but the damage is caused by the cumulative effect along with existing emissions.

And then there's the animal cruelty aspect where pets are terrorized by the barrage of explosions all night long.

There's really no logical reason to have fireworks at all.  it's an emotional "need" based on tradition.  Imagine if no one grew up watching fireworks displays.  Nobody would ever miss them.

I'm not a freedom hater, but I do think there are better uses for ones cash that can be just as much fun.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I thought the ban on "party favor" type fireworks was due to concerns raised on smoke, not really noise or fire hazards.  I was surprised when they were banned.  While I don't care for fountains, sparklers, morning glories, etc, they were "good" for the kids.  Those pop-pops are lame and make a mess, even without noise.  The Torpedoes, those can be pretty fun.

Those new red firecracker shaped pop pops are pretty loud and they leave red paper which is good for us with Pake family.
Sift em in a fish net and throw em by the handful. Almost sounds like a short string.
(Not the white rice paper rubbish like the regular pop pops do.)

Did anyone read what SnowFlapp posted above.  :wtf:
Hope that was sarcasm.

The Tornadoes is the one that matches what you're describing.  A kitty litter or dog crap scooper works well.  Or at least what my friends' kids were using.

The ones that don't pop remain for random cars that drive by.   ;D

right out of high school I remember buying aerial fireworks from my ex-gf's uncle who was a cop at the time
1 year we picking up the fireworks at his house and we are eating lunch while 2 solo bike cops on duty pull up, buy some aerials and put in their solo bikes and go back to work loaded up with illegal fireworks
2 of my neighbors that have illegal fireworks are also LEO

I remember doing low budget aerials when I was younger
jumping jack and slingshot.  or if you got a little more money, ground blooming flowers and slingshot
light it and wait until the fuse burns real short and then slingshot it so it ignites going up  :geekdanc:
but not any more. I save my money for ammo now

Jumping jacks were nuts. Didn’t know which way they were going. Especially if you lit a whole pack.

Wrist-rocket aerials.  :D
We’d even do it with individual firecrackers just let it fly as soon as it’s lit.
They’d pop street light high.
Nothing like lighting an explosive next to your head.

Any one remember when you busted out the old stock of firecrackers and got the “fast fuse”
Almost no time to throw the pack.
That was before the green wicks.

I used to just throw them. Slingshot is a way better idea. Maybe one day the commies will be out of power and we can go back to having some cheap thrills again.

I always found the ground bloomers with report to be a really fun one. I think we need to have the regular fireworks be legal again without permits. Some sort of compromise needs to be done. Let people have their regular fireworks, including the small bottle rockets, and hammer people using the big arial ones maybe.

We did that too, until the older kids busted out wrist rockets.
The old backhand throw. Punk in left hand and fly it with the right.
Lighting em off one by one. Blow up model ships and planes. Good times. Made one pack last a while.

Then you had the invention of those paperless strings you could braid together and they’d be a huge popping fireball at the top until they got to the “bombs”

Bet O.F.s got some stories.

we used to make rockets using the jumping jacks with report.

1. separate jumping jacks
2. cut off tip of wooden skewer
3. use the tip to plug up hole sparks come out of
4. attach jumping jack to skewer with fuse down

We use to build models then blow them apart with fire works. Also we use to use pipes and different kinds of projectiles to see how high in the air we could shoot them.

How many of you old guys remember the "Xchange" juice can?

We used to take apart the firecrackers (the potent "Duck" brand firecrackers) and fill the can with the powder and pack it in.  Then we attached the fuse and we have a.......well..... bomb.

My last experience with this is I lit the fuse, turned to run away and the "bomb" exploded a micro second later.  Fortunately my face was turned away but pieces of shrapnel from the can embedded in my armpit and upper arm.

Good times! :D
