When your beloved 91-30 is leaning against the wall with the cruciform bayonet mounted, do not pick it straight up when you wish to caress or fondle it.

You will poke a nice cruciform hole in the ceiling.

Length of M-N with Bayonet = 5' 5"

Height of ceiling  = 8'

Clearance to ceiling = 8' minus 5' 5" = 2' 7"

Distance from bayonet tip to place on the forend you will grab to pick it up = 3' 5"

Possible maximum depth of hole in ceiling when you pick it up, depending on the passionate impulse with which you desire to caress or fondle  it =  3' 5" minus 2' 7" = 10"

Actual depth of hole varies according to your height, strength, and passion level.

I asked you not to ask me that!

I stuck with the carbine lengths so I wouldn't have to change my safe around.  Those 91-30's are loooong.

My explanation:

Honey you know how you hate spiders, well I saw one of those big ones on the ceiling and.....well.....the only thing I had in my hand was this rifle and.....well.....I just had to get rid it for you and....I really didn't mean to put all those holes in the ceiling, even the big ones.....I told you I should have kept it loaded. I would only have put one hole in then?

Her reply:

All kukai!

My mumbling:

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Anyone else find smle bayo releases a little sticky?  Makes for good method of finding out who was messing with your stuff.  Look for the guy with the cut on his face.

Don't ask me how I know...

Bayonets.  Just had to see what the rifle would look like with it.  Anyone else suffer from that besides me?

Ow.  I guess you could always call it a dueling scar.  Need a monocle to go with it, though, like Col. Klink.

The 91-30 hasn't got a cornered market on pukas. About did the same thing with my 30-40 1898 Springfield and the long bayonet that goes with.
My managing partner was not amused.

Supposedly, the long bayonets were intended in part to defend agains horse cavalry charges and were long enough to pierce to the heart of a horse.  At least I read that in some book somewhere.  They were also kind of a transition from the days of pikemen and modern small arms.

I was comparing the lengths of the  bayonets of old with more modern ones, because I noticed that the bayonet for, say, the  .30 M1 Carbine, was so short in comparison to the Mosin-Nagant bayonet.  The carbine bayonet was so tiny it  seemed totally worthless as a thrusting weapon.  Wouldn't want to be stuck with one, but the difference in length is pretty obvious:

The Carbine bayonet's point extends 6 1/2" from the muzzle.

So I did a little searching on bayonets and I found this, which was very interesting:

http://thearmouryonline.co.uk/BayonetHistory.htm

Quote
The Knife Bayonet
Towards the end of the 19th Century military fashions once again began to change and the long elaborate sword type bayonets began to give way to a shorter, easier to handle knife-type. This type with wooden grips and usually a metal scabbard quickly became the standard which has lasted to the current day.
There are a couple of contenders for the earliest actual knife bayonet (as opposed to shortened sword bayonets) The most commonly quoted is the German 1871/84 pattern issued in 1886, however an earlier example could be the United States M1861 "Dahlgren". This was a short brass and wood gripped bowie-bladed bayonet for the 1876 Navy rifle, reputed to have been designed by Admiral John Dahlgren.

This was also of interest:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pike_(weapon)#End_of_the_pike_era

Quote
The great Hawaiian warrior king Kamehameha I had an elite force of men armed with very long spears who seem to have fought in a manner identical to European pikemen, despite the usual conception of his people's general disposition for individualistic dueling as their method of close combat. It is not known whether Kamehameha himself introduced this tactic or if it was taken from the use of traditional Hawaiian weapons.[citation needed

So I guess if you are ever charged by horse cavalry, an M-N bayonet would hold you in good stead.
