Firearms Industry Shipping Experiences During Buying Panic, Good and Bad (Read 5019 times)

Inspector

I order a lot of gun parts and components. And I have ordered quite a bit as of late. My experience with the following companies runs the gamut from shipping in less than an hour from ordering to taking over a month to receive. This thread is not meant to praise or complain but to just share experiences as if you are thinking of ordering from any of these companies you will know what to expect during all this panic buying.

ACME Bullets - I order Powder Coated bullets regularly from them. They are out of stock on a lot of stuff. But if you find something to order their quality is good, processing and shipping has been pretty normal. A week or less to process and shipped USPS. And their bullets come packed in these cool wooden boxes. I don’t order much from them any more as I am casting my own bullets these days.

Berries Bullets - I order 9mm plated bullets from them. They process my orders under a week and they are well packaged.

Brownells - Just placed an order this week. I order mostly gun parts and bullets from them. They are out of a lot of parts but their inventory is so vast they have acceptable substitutes. Best part is they shipped my order within an hour of placing my order.

Brunos Shooters Supplies - I was recommended to this place by Heavies. This is a family run retail store in Phoenix that also does online orders. I order SD ammo, bullets and primers and mostly powder from them. Their shipping is pretty standard. In other words a week or less to process and ship. They package everything well and I assume they ship to Hawaii since Heavies highly recommended them. Their CS is a  family member and she is terrific. They were out of an item that I ordered once and immediately called me to let me know.

Capital Cartridge - I ordered almost 10k once fired brass from them in various calibers from July 2020 to October 2020. Orders typically take about a week or less to process and ship. I had one order where I was shorted a few cases and they immediately sent out replacements. They answer their phone and their CS is very good.

Classic Firearms - My experience with them has been good and not so good. I ordered a couple of firearms to be shipped directly to me. They processed my order in a couple of weeks but they shipped each gun separately. And they did not inform me of this. They only sent one tracking number. So of course I thought one firearm went missing when only one arrived. The second one arrived a few days later with a different tracking number. Both were shipped the same day supposedly. When I called up to report the missing firearm they informed me they sent them in separate packages. They gave me the other tracking number. Overall I was happy with the firearms but not the processing. Then I ordered some HiCap mags and a mag loader for my 10/22’s. They were processed separately and shipped separately from different states but both were processed within a week and arrived quickly and packaged well. On January 16 I ordered some HiCap Glock Mags. They have yet to process the order. They sent me an email apologizing for the delay.

DG Bullets - I order their green 9mm powder coated bullets from them. They took a day or two to process my order and I had them in less than a week. They were well packaged.

Grafs - I order lots of bullets from these guys. I usually order in small quantities of 500 or so. I have never had a problem until my last order. And the last order took 3 weeks to process and ship. On January 1, I ordered 1,000 PPU bullets .268 diameter. So a specialty bullet. Problem is they didn’t use enough tape to tape the box shut IMHO and it broke open at the PO here in my town. When it broke open the PO workers thought the bullets were cartridges and they intercepted it and held onto it. It took over a week of contacting the PO and Grafs to get the PO to realize their mistake and deliver the package. I received it today.

Midway USA - I order a lot of stuff from them. Right now I mostly order casting equipment and molds. I wait until they have their free shipping on orders over $50. But I have ordered primers and bullets and powder when they have sales. They usually process orders in a week or less and package their stuff sufficiently.

Missouri Bullet Co - I used to order bullets from them quite often but I started ordering casting lead from as they offer hard cast lead ingots at a decent price. Lately they have taken as long as a month to process orders. My last order was under 2 weeks.

Numerichs (Gun Parts) - They have been slow to process orders as of late. Usually over a week. Also, gun parts quality can be hit or miss. But they will return something if you don’t like it.

Powder Valley - This place used to be my go to place for powder, primers and bullets. But lately they have been out of stock on most everything I need. But when I have placed orders they process them in a week or less and package them quite well. There have been a couple of times where they took longer than a week to process my orders and they send an email apologizing.

Sages Reloading - I found this place on FB of all places. He has a regular website to order from. It is a small business but they usually get their orders out in a day or two and they are packaged so well it takes a while to open them. He sells mostly bullets and cases and specializes in Sierra, Hornady, and XTreme Bullets. Unfortunately, he does not get his orders often any more due to the shortages so his website is empty quite often. The key to buying from him is to join his FB group and he will let you know when he gets a shipment. But things go fast.

XTreme Bullets - I know they don’t ship directly any more to Hawaii. But they usually process orders in a week or less. Their quality is excellent.

I placed orders with all of these companies during the panic buying. Stock may be unavailable or low due to demand. And processing times can be longer or shorter due to demand. So take my experiences as just a guideline. I’ll add more as I remember them.

I prefer midway or brownells since they offer shipment from fedex or ups,  I lost a few packages recently with usps so I just don't trust them anymore and rather pay the extra shipping cost.

Parts from Brownells and Midway arrived to me in about a week.
Ammo shipments took longer to process but was shipped fast via FedEx. Longest I waited was 2.5 months.

DG powder coat appears thicker and more evenly coated than Acme. Also, I have only ordered 115gr & 124gr 9mm from DG and 158gr 38/357 SWC and 250gr 45 SWC from Acme. The DG 9mm work well in my Glock 17 and Sig P228 but I had a problem with bullet set back in my 9mm revolvers because I couldn’t get a really tight crimp on them. This issue did not appear in my semi autos due to lighter recoil. DG uses a softer lead in their bullets. As I tried to crimp a little tighter I deformed the boolit. Also, during testing of different powders and loads with the DG boolits I actually had a couple of FTF and FTEject properly in my Glock and Sig. Out of all the different boolits and loads I have put through those two guns in almost 30 years I have never seen that before. And one more note, I found one loading that not only works flawlessly in both guns but hits to PoA in both guns. And that load uses Alliant Green Dot. I have used Green Dot in an old standard reduced load in 30-06 for the Springfield 1903A3 which is the only use I have ever used Green Dot for. Not sure why I even bothered to try it as it is not a favorite of mine for 9mm. But it works well in my two semi autos. I loaded up 1,000 of both weight boolits and have shot all of he 124gr and 400 of the 115gr and they all have functioned flawlessly. The 115gr also worked flawlessly in my nephew’s Sig 365 and his S&W M&P.

I know I wrote more than you asked for but it is my first trial into using PC boolits in 9mm.

Midwest Gun Works, orders usually ship in 2 days, but  best part is they have interactive gun schematics.

You won’t let me weasel out of this, will you?

It’s hard to say to since I have not done a head to head, head test. But if I had a preference I would say the harder alloy of the ACME boolits makes a better better overall head IMHO. That is a personal preference. I can’t fault the DG boolits for performance in 9mm. The softer lead will perform fine in 38SPL as well. But not in 357 Magnum. In 45 it might perform well in a semi but I like to push them in my revolver.  So overall if you want to buy from one company only I say go with ACME because of their harder alloy.

I only recently discovered https://www.eurooptic.com/ because  they were running an insane deal on entry level mauser rifles. Their CS is better than anyone I have dealt with. I saw a typo (my fault) that would have held up my FFL order, sent a 'contact us' note to their sales dept and they shipped the order even before sending an acknowledgement of the CS email the next day. Since then I have bought 2 different optics from them, all 3 orders showed up 3-4 days before expected. Also their pricing is very competitive and shipping is a tad cheaper then the 'big guys'. If they are within $20 of someone else, I'd rather give them the business.

Getting back on topic. A new vendor (for me) is Scheels. Free shipping and super short times between order and ship. I’ve had one order ship about an hour after I placed the order, and that was maybe 2 pm HST. But, they need to pay a bit more attention on packing. A couple of orders of boolits arrived loose in the shipping box. Ok, but orders of the same boolits from Midway and Cabelas arrive all in the boxes.

Midway isn’t offering the free shipping over $50 as much. I sometimes have stuff in my cart waiting for the next free ship. And now, some codes I find, some items I want aren’t eligible. But still overall shop often with Midway.

OP - I thought we had a thread on that before.  I've only had good experienced with them.  Sometimes their shipping can be pricey, but I've had only good experiences.  I've heard folks that have had bad experiences with items being back ordered when they showed in stock.  I read that that was because they had multiple warehouses.

Primary Arms - Yup. All good experiences from them. Good pricing on their sales.  Carry a lot of the stuff that I want/need.

I started this thread mostly to just review how things are working during this buying panic. Is the thread you mentioned prior to the panic or also during this panic. Just curious.
