Basket case
« on: February 04, 2021, 07:05:27 PM »
Just got my hands on a old bare bones 550.
Seeing how I have extra 550 parts (handle, primer tube, powder measure, springs etc...) think I'll try a build in all of my spare time.
Got the main shaft freed and it seems pretty dang smooth along with yolk and arms.  :D
I'll pull pins and clean next  then Shell plate platform clean up.

Actually, I reduced them by 50% already. Just wanted to show what a "BIG" job it was.

No,, kinda felt too guilty as it was a gifted basket case.
Nothing seems "bad" and I do have extra 550 parts to finish it

cannot see the archery range or the chickens
Chickens are archery range, they've gotten much faster.  :shake:

 :wtf:
That supposed to be  a trick question ?
If you've ever been to the Dillon site  you know that the first thing they tell you about maintenance is to NOT us WD40 !
It was all "Rust Blaster" shown in photo and a lot of gentle coaxing.
Yeah Mac, I know.

disclaimer: I do not own a 550.
But I would only use wd40 to clean the machine up. I'll wager that rustblast thing is pretty similar to wd40.
You don't want to lubricate the machine with wd40.

So what? did that thing wash up on the beach by your house?

Don't know if rustblast is the same as Evap-o-Rust, but I know WD40 is like water compared to that stuff.

I used it on some extremely rusted tools.Takes half a day to get the majority of rust off.  For large items like this, just soak some paper towels in it, and wrap around the rusted parts.  Keep checking it.  Once the rust is able to be wiped off, remove the towels and clean off the Evap-o-Rust.  Leaving it on too long causes increased oxidation which turns metal black.  Harder to clean after that point.

I love the stuff.

One thing I have yet to try is electrolysis.  I started collecting scrap steel and iron to use for it.  You just need a DC 12V or less low amperage power source, like an automotive or cellphone battery charger, a bucket or tub large enough for the part to clean, some copper wire, water of course, sacrificial scrap metal as the anode, and some chemical to allow the water to conduct the electricity like Arm & Hammer Baking Soda soap powder or straight baking soda.

Looks to work quite well.  I'll be setting this up soon to get the rust off some benchtop power tools:  grinder, drill press, etc.

I've seen if you want to do large parts, you should have several pieces of sacrificial metal wired together to increase the anode "attraction".  The anode/s need to be as close to the part being cleaned as possible without touching.  Some take a 5-gal bucket and use wire to attach 6-8 lengths of rebar vertically to the inside of the bucket, then attach wire between each rebar piece.

Those video processes take to long for ax head or hand tools, I can get them shiny with a little elbow grease and a wire wheel.
Getting rust off by soaking in water seems kinda . . . anyway .

   All taken apart.
Cleaned and painted primer tube and handle, handle knob polished .
Wire wheeled cast body, arms and crank to get rid of oxidation under peeling paint, clean and rattle can.

Oiled main shaft and cylinder interior and installed, greased down and pinned crank and arms.
Waiting on Dillon alignment tool for shell plate platform (required ) before I put on primer tube and handle.
Should be functional by the 16th   :D

Two is one and one is none has a new meaning.  :D

Stand is from"InLineFabrication.com"
Much sturdier than the Dillon hi-mount and even slightly cheaper.
I ordered from Ebay but if I would have ordered directly from InLineFabrication, they would have included their version of cartridge dispenser.
No worries, had extra everything to make this puppy work.
Still waiting for the alignment die, but a "soft run" rotated and aligned everything.

Thanks LG

...
What's the alignment tool for?
If I had a 550, I would just take it over to your house and pick it up a few weeks later.
