Recap: Defered till next week.

About 1000 wrote to oppose and 16 to support.

Maui PD opposed and HPD supported but with amendments because officers personal rifles are not excluded.
NRA west coast guy was on the zoom Dan Reid

1 guy used his 22LR, AR and SKS as a demo which was super cool.

Favella went to bat for us. He used his fathers story as an example, without a foregrip, his dad would lose grip on the rifle.

Sen K. asked what features does a mass shooter use. Total bait question.  Him and Sen Lee are leaning toward using that as an excuse to ban rifles.

Had a guy who's turning 21 at the end of this month testify cause he wants to buy a rifle.

Gabbard responded to emails that he will vote no on the bill

No MDA testimony via zoom or written.

If she's the one I found online, she's a retired professor at University of Hawai'i at Manoa - William S. Richardson School of Law.

Only polices and military, eh?  Sounds familiar.

Was it really necessary to add that second sentence?

It's troubling to think where your mind must be when posting this kind of comment.

But, they are so highly trained and responsible !
They are too stupid to realize how this only would serve to increase the distrust of police.

Someone testified had a MPD shootout.  MPD has 13 rd mags and 3 cops. 40 shots and 12 hits.  So if trained handgun handlers need more than 10rds, so do we.

It sucks the mental gymnastics we have to go through to justify owning these mags. The size of a mag should be of no concern if in the hands of a law abiding citizen. That is where the discussion should end.

I disagree on one point... there shouldn't even be a discussion.

So does this mean we have to go through this entire charade again?

If their primary concern is mass shootings, then banning one type of rifle is not the solution.

How many mass shootings have we seen in Hawaii since the Xerox/Uyesugi shooting?  Answer:  none before OR after.

BTW, Uyesugi used a handgun -- Glock 17.  Interestingly, that's what HPD now carries.

to die than in the events associated with a rifle, according to a new study in the Journal
of the American College of Surgeons.

Handguns are the most common weapon type used in mass shootings in the United States,
with a total of 143 different handguns being used in 95 incidents between 1982 and February
2020. These figures are calculated from a total of 118 reported cases over this period,
meaning handguns are involved in over 80 percent of mass shootings.

Sen K. asked what features does a mass shooter use. Total bait question.  Him and Sen Lee are leaning toward using that as an excuse to ban rifles.

At Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded 17 others with two semi-automatic pistols (a .22-caliber Walther P22 semi-automatic handgun and a 9 mm semi-automatic Glock 19 handgun). It is the deadliest school shooting in the history of the United States.

So first ban any ammo .22 caliber and up, then ban all semi-automatic handguns, then ban revolvers. That should take care of the problem. I'm sure no one will ever be killed by an insane criminal ever again, especially with a firearm.

Those people are so fucking dumb, and/or lying fascists.

Banning handguns is not a new idea... it's an older idea than banning semi-auto rifles. The National Coalition to Ban Handguns only gave up and changed their name because the public support for banning handguns was incredibly low.

In 1974, the National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH) was founded by armed-robbery victim Mark Borinsky. In 1975, Republican marketing manager Pete Shields, whose 23-year-old son had been murdered, joined NCCH as Chairman. In 1980, the organization became Handgun Control, Inc. (HCI) and partnered with the National Coalition to Ban Handguns (NCBH). The partnership did not last long; the NCBH, renamed in 1990 as the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV), generally advocates for stricter gun laws than does the Brady Campaign.

HCI had few resources until 1980, after the murder of musician John Lennon increased the public's interest in shootings. By 1981, HCI's membership exceeded 100,000. In 1983, the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence (CPHV) was founded as an educational outreach organization and sister project. In 1989, CPHV established the Legal Action Project to press its agenda in the courts.

In 2001, Handgun Control, Inc. was renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence was renamed the Brady Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, in honor of both Jim and Sarah Brady. The same year, the Million Mom March (MMM) was incorporated into the Brady Campaign.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence began in 1974 as the National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH).

From 1980 through 2000 it operated under the name Handgun Control, Inc. (HCI).

In 2001, it was renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and its sister project, the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, was renamed the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

The nonprofits rebranded as Brady in February 2019, on the 25th anniversary of the implementation of the Brady Bill.

So, basically, as their objectives changed from handgun control to all firearms, Brady, along with other groups, changed their names and focus.

Handguns were demonized in the 70s and 80s as only used by gangs and criminals.  Back then, Cops carried revolvers, so it was easy to scare people with stories of quick reloads with magazines holding upwards of 30 rounds.  The police were simply out-gunned, so departments and state police agencies started issuing semi-autos.  Once that happened, and more and more "civilians" started buying them as well, the courts ruled that the handguns were no longer subject to bans as they were now in common and widespread use by the public.

It's very doubtful there will be a resurgence in the effort to ban semi-auto handguns.  It failed before -- it'll continue to fail.

The AWB of 1994 also failed in that it was allowed to sunset in 2004.  Nothing changed in that time.  In fact, Columbine happened, proving that bans can't stop mass shootings.

California has had the most mass shootings of any state, and the types of semi-auto rifles allowed there is very strict.

There's no evidence that bans of any type of firearm stops, or even reduces the number of deaths, from mass shootings.

The criminal who shot Giffords used a Glock 19.

6 deaths / 13 injured by gunfire

So, yeah.  Ban AR-15s.
