FFL for online purchase
« on: February 18, 2021, 01:38:25 PM »
Hello all, I am curious how firearms purchase is done online and which local FFL is preferred or recommended.  I have used Davidsons in the past where ffl was provided to choose from but that’s the extent of what know.
I’m looking to purchase from gunbroker.com.  Any info or tips would help.  Mahalo!

Did you talk to Dwayne at Danger Close?
He helped me do a transfer before unless his policy changed.

Dwayne did 2 for me prior to Bat Flu.

I can see most small shops not wanting to do any pistols atm. They dont have space to store your stuff for 90+ days while you wait for a spot at the HPD FA desk.

I checked the website at dangerclose, it says they don’t do such since mid-late January 2021. I went to youngguns today to find out...

I always used OGC.  Charged me $25 for veteran/LE discount ... regular price $40.

Depending on the seller, they may already have your selected FFL's license on file.  That makes it convenient.

If you use OGC, you can download a signed copy of their license to forward to the seller if they don't already have it.

Some Hawaii FFLs have a policy to only receive firearm shipments from other FFLs.  Too many inexperienced private sellers cause problems when shipping guns.  Make sure whichever local FFL you pick accepts firearms from non-FFLs if that's applicable to your purchase.

As I posted on other threads, you may want to factor in more than just FFL transfer fees.  As mentioned, look into their storage fee policies.  OGC implemented a fee for storage after 90 days, but they've waived that fee during the pandemic as long as you are actively working to get an appointment as soon as possible.

Another factor is location.  Don't force yourself to have to leave work, drive downtown to pickup your permit, then drive across the island to pickup the gun, then back to work.  You might also want to stop at home between the shop and work if keeping the gun in your car at work is prohibited.  Even if it's allowed, there's the potential risk of theft.

Another thing to consider is to whom you normally give most of your shooting-related business.  It makes sense to spend your money where the service, variety, and prices keep you coming back.  Taking that FFL transfer fee away from them after you just bought a gun from another source takes all that revenue away from them.  I'd try to support them as much as I can even if they couldn't compete on the firearm purchase itself.  If they can't stay in business, it affects you, too.

Those are just a few things to consider.  There are threads on here that lay out the details of making online purchases from Gun Broker auctions, dealers, and just private sellers advertising on the Internet.  If you have specific questions, I'm sure someone has the experience to help.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

Thank you. I read a few posts here and learned a lot and I appreciate this thoughtful response.  I’ll post any follow up questions I may have. Thanks again all.

Isn't OGC's FFL fee $50?  Since when did they waive the storage fee for after 90 days?

Good experience with OGC. They’re aware of the waits on permits and will hold your firearm for a good period of time. I believe the ffl fee was $41 and some change

I used OGC last year for a Gunbroker purchase and it was completely painless if you're OK with the $40 transfer fee.

At the time their website had an expired FFL license linked for download, but Carter promptly emailed me an updated one.

Their fees are on their website:

Quote
The FFL fee per transfer is $40/Firearm,

Active Duty Military or LE members with valid credentials pay $25/Firearm.
https://ogctactical.3dcartstores.com/FFL-Transfer-Request_c_62.html

Their storage fee policy is in the next paragraph on that same webpage:

Quote
Unless special arrangements are prearranged in writing (for active duty deployment, etc),
OGC will store firearms awaiting pickup from FFL transfers at no cost for 90 days
After 90 days a storage fee will accrue at $32/month.  When either 2 years have elapsed,
or the accrued storage fees exceed the retail purchase price of the firearm, OGC is
authorized to sell the firearm as they see fit to recoup storage costs.
OGC may waive or discount these fees at their discretion.

And the storage fee is waived per a forum post from Carter himself:

Just a side note:  due to the registration craziness we’ve been waiving storage for Guns arriving March or later at least until this is over.  That doesn’t get the guys who have left guns in our armory over a year off the hook!

I guess in addition to waiving or discounting, OGC can also choose to "charge" you more at their discretion.  Lol

OP, Brent Hamasaki is good to go. I used him a couple times already. Pickup location is in Kalihi, near Marukai. Google his name & his info should show up. Fee was $25-30, I cant remember.

If you are going to disparage a specific business for something they did, you might want to start a new topic in the vendor's area of the forum.  OGC has a whole section dedicated toward interacting with forum members.  If you're interested in having your concerns actually addressed, that's a better place to start.

Just a suggestion.  I'm not the moderator.   :shaka:

I'm not interested at all at having anything addressed by any specific business.  It's not my $.  I'm just providing info relative to the the OP's request.  I'd also recommend Brent Hamasaki.
