some contributing factors in my opinion:
- masks mandates
- unemployment either by choice or involuntary
- criminals emboldened by low police priority

I think the mandatory lockdowns also contribute to the rise in crime.

Hawaii has fostered and continue to foster by cowardice and fear an environment that emboldens criminals.

They have rights, you know.  It is our duty to retreat......

Too much aloha given to the criminal element from the Aloha State than given to law abiding citizens.

Misuse of aloha.

With that being said, Aloha........

Love the HPD quote about crime statistics fluctuating month to month. Maybe so should the HPD budget?
If you allow government to break the law for an "emergency" they will create "emergencies" to break the law.

I'm surprised that things didn't get worse a long time ago.  I think they were, but media just wasn't covering it.  Have "friends" that share with me their surveillance camera footage as well as community level group reports of this stuff.  It's been happening, and often.

One of these days, these punks are going to escalate too far or pick the wrong house. . .

Do ya feel lucky punk?

HPD spent tons of the covid funds to have all these nice ATV vehicles nicely equipped with their sirens and blue lights so they can go harass the people on the beaches not wearing masks and not keeping 72 inches apart.

And to pay overtime to officers not on the job.

Quick they respond when they see someone without masks or people less than 72 inches apart.

Robbery or stolen property?  They take 4-eva.  They busy, they said.

But no forget.  It's your duty to retreat......

the problem is the money. COVID funds were targeted just for that. There's no additional (incentive) funding for property crimes. I think that's why private organizations hire private security (useless). It's a loop of nepotism when one really does a deep dive into the problem.

Not hard to figure out.

Lockdowns, COVID-19 fears and layoffs, plus free government money equals increased drug and alcohol use.

Theft has always been a side-effect of drug use.

One goes up, the other has to follow.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Yep.  One of these days these lucky punks will go too far or pick the wrong house.

Susan Ballard or no Susan Ballard, they will be either in a world of shit and or dead.

Just as there are criminals that think they can get away with it, there are those out there that are willing to make sure they don't.

Interesting.

To add to the OP, i was driving on vineyard blvd last night, goin home from aiea side and there was bout 15 cop cars parked at nuuanu and vineyyard. So i circled around to see wth was goin on. Im nosy like that. Saw a dude cuffed, so im assuming robbery or assualt. While waiting at the light i saw 3 of the cops take off and so eh why the hell not, followed them to punchbowl area and ultimately ended up at an apartment complex, another guy handcuffed walking down the stairs. Ended up smoking another cig, so i was gonna go mcdonalds to get some happy meals (pokemon cards to be exact) . At school st and nuuanu ave, at the 7.11 there was an ambulance and 3 cops trying to revive someone. Well the emt was pushing on his chest like he was doin cpr. I cant say anything illegal happened at 7.11 but seriously thats not even a square mile and all these things happened lol.
